22RE egr problem

Hi all, hoping someone can help me figure out my egr problem? My '85 4Runner failed the CA smog test (NOX) and all symptoms point to the egr system. I've checked the egr valve with a vacuum pump (nothing happened) and even tried swapping it from another 22RE. It seems like nothing is coming out of the egr port on the head? I'm pretty sure the port on the intake manifold is clear because as soon as I unhook the pipe from it it kills the engine? Any help is greatly appreciated!

there is a EGR cooler located on the back of the head. over time they can become clogged.
of course your engine will stall when you open a huge hole in the vacuum

Check and make sure the egr port in your plenum is clear. It runs all the way to the front of the manifold then makes a 90 degree turn. Pull the egr valve and blow air in there to see if it's clear. If it's plugged you have to pull the small freeze plug on the side of the manifold whre the passage makes the 90 degree turn to get all the carbon out. Also clean our or replace the egr modulator before your next test and put de natured alchohol in the tank.
