Custom bed pics

I have had a number of requests for more pics of the tube bed I made. I didn't want to add a bunch of other pics to the flatbed post so I started my own. I looked at the flatbed post a bunch of times and this is what I came up with last fall. The tailgate was added a couple of months ago. If anybody needs more pics, let me know. I took pics from just about every angle. The bed has been up against trees and rocks and has held up great. It is welded at 8 points to the frame and could be cut off easily if needed. All of the diamond plate is rivited and comes off easily, so I have easy access to the top of my fuel tank. It is all 1.75" tube (some dom and hrew). I used a JD2 bender and my miller dvi2 welder. All of my notches were done with the tried and true chop saw method(and some grinding with the old milwaukee grinder). The diamond plate is approx 3/16" thick and got it free from a buddy.

The bed was on my truck in 1 week. The diamond plate took a couple of nights. The tailgate required the majority of my limited brain power, that took about a week. The tg was a challenge, I wanted it to function like a regular tg with a hinged license plate frame. Making a spring loaded pin and hiding it in 1.75 tube and somehow connecting it to a hinged license plate frame is not the easiest thing to do. For some unexplained reason bending, welding, and grinding(wtf?), calms my nerves.

I probably could have done it in a weekend (working all day), but I have a wife and 3 kids so it was done after everybody went to sleep. This is basically how the whole build went. My brother drove from Florida and spent a few weeks here in WI. He would work on both the trucks( he has a built 82 toyota) during the day and then we would bust ass at night till the wee hours of the a.m. I did the bed before he got up here and did not weld it to the truck till we had the sas and the rear suspension done.

Any idea how much it weighs? I'd imagine with all of that diamond plate it's considerably heavier than a stock bed.

Looks excellent though! I need to figure out what I want to do with my rusty bobbed bed and this is good inspiration.

I'm not sure. The old bed seemed heavy as hell (myself and a buddy lifted it off. When we lifted just the tube structure, it seemed light. The stack of aluminum I had didn't seem to heavy either. This bed is considerably shorter than the stock (It is 5'4" now) I would guess it is lighter.

Does the tail gate hinge work like I'm thinking?

How did you make the male piece of the hinge?

Looks killer

Hells yea. It comes off when the gate is dropped at approx. a 45degree angle. I used 1.5" tube to make the male part. I cut the sides off and welded plates accross the sides and capped off the end. When they were done they looked liked one piece. I painted them and wrapped them in some kind of heavy duty gorilla tape to keep the metal on metal contact to a minimum.

Very Cool !!! I am starting on my flatbed and couldn't decide on how to construct it. I wanted a flatbed but wanted to retain the stock bed look. Yours fits that model perfectly.

90toypu's bed was indeed the design that got me started on mine. I took that design and made some tweeks here and there. Hopefully somebody else can run with it and make it there own too.
