Dude he's wrong. 43 FT LBS is for 85+ blocks, you have an 84 block, rod cap is 46 FT LBS, and main bearing cap is 76 FT LBS.

It does'nt matter......once the bearing spins in the rod , the rod is shot, it only takes one knock.

I have shimmed the bottom bearing shell back, with a beer can skin cut to size, lasted about two weeks, 20yrs ago

Damn, bummer to hear.

Is it still going with the loosely torques cap or did it start making noise again? I am genuinely curious how long it lasted.

My parts truck was claimed to have a bad bottom end when I picked it up and I was excited to try and run it until it blew a rod through the side of the block...unfortunately it was just a bad head gasket and cracked exhaust manifold. Still managed to get ~20 miles blowing smoke until it lost compression and would no longer run/start
