Started the install of the 4" Superlift kit on Anne's '94 4runner. Part of doing the lift includes (for me) installing 4.88 diffs.
Well, after about 8 hours of working on this f'n thing, Mr. Hogan and I CANNOT get the stock diff out of the axle!!!
This is no lie! We have all but three studs out - those were broken (or otherwise rendered useless) during attempts at removal via welding the nuts to the ends of the studs. We have: lifted the entire truck by the front of the rear diff (by the housing near the pinion). Pounded on the diff from the back. Attempted to "cut" the seal by running a box cutter around the seal... the thing has NOT BUDGED!
We are out of ideas. We believe that it's rust around the remaining studs holding it in place, but for f-sake! Ideas? Thoughts? Yes, we have contemplated buying a new axle housing - that's not in the budget.
The truck is out of commission at this point: rear lift is in, front not even started (wanted to turn truck around). Anyone have any friggen ideas? (the studs are soaking in liquid wrench again - don't know what eslse to do other than drink beer....)
Thanks in advance... Oh... and to all of you people in the non-rust belt... :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

I think so too, it's pretty unliklely that the cast 3rd memeber and the housing would rust together. They usually seperate with a couple wacks of a bfh and perhaps a properly placed chisel.
Hey.. give me some credit... I have 350 posts! :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
From an IFS lift perspective, I think Superlift has the best kit. Fully-boxed front cross members - something that no other kit has. Besides, this is my wife's rig - not a trail rig.
The torch is the ONLY thing we haven't done. But after welding nuts to 10 of the studs (all of them more than once), the mating surface DID get some heat.
When I say this thing isn't moving, I mean it ISN'T moving. Not even the slightest. Believe me, we've taken breaks and gone back looking for the stud that we missed. Hell, I've even gone to the FSM hoping to find something - I've removed and installed dozens of these things, so I'm at a total loss at this point.
I'll torch the hell out of it tonight - hopefully something will happen.
how about this.. u got a welder i see.. so use a cutoff wheel and cut a section out of the axle housing opposite the 3rd member.. then u can stick something in there (brass punch with an extension) and whack it with a sledge.. then patch up your hole w/ a piece of metal..
Garage-ota has found a roomie:laughing: Want to buy a IFS rear axle housing:flipoff2: You can weld the new shit right up, its is all bare...I'll give ya a good deal.:flipoff2:
Heat and BFH is the answer, or Zilla, but he is a little Fed up right now
Maybe you should get that Tera 60 housing from Mike :flipoff2:
Yeah.. Anne would love a Tera 60 in her 4RUnner... sheesh. :flipoff2:
