I am in the process of dismantling, cleaning and re-greasing three brifields. I have done this twice befor and not ran into any problems. The first birf I am rebuilding is one that I bought off the ground of a wrecker, its a little rusty but it's just a spare. Anyway, it goes together no problem. The last two I pulled out of a buddy who is rebuilding an axle. These two are in pristine condition. Anyway they go together like a biatch. Have to praticlly hammer the freakin balls in place. Once it is all together the inner race moves rather freely but as soon as you push on the edge of the cage the entire assembly moves as one for a couple of mil befor binding up. None of the balls move and the whole works just sort of wiggles back and fourth. I was carfeul to make sure the narrow end of the cage was facing towards the outer axle shaft and that the protruding edge of inner race was pointing towards the inner axle shaft. Why the binding? There werent any odvious cracks or chips in the housing.
Had the same thing happen. Turned out the bell and inner cage were a bit distorted and they would bind. I ran it and never had a problem until I blew it a couple of months later when I wedged it in a big ass rock.
Why? Don't be the guy that slows everyone else down on the trail with a fix that could have easily have been avoided. Get a set of Longfields like Desertoy said.

1) It only take about 10 mintues a birf.
2) Even with longfields I would have to do this regardless. One birf was full of water and rust and the other two were out of a JUNKYARD axle.
3) I am a poor student/lube guy who has like 5 more years of training and working for miniumum wage ahead of him.
4) I live in Canada. Money doesn't grow on igloos out here you know.
