I'm been contemplateing the bobbing of the rear on my '85 4rnr. I've search and searched and came up empty on one small detail........the hard top.
I'm thinking of removing the side slideing glass and moveing the rear section forward to right behind the rear seat, leaving the stationary glass (rear sides) for the rear passengers to look out, then making a bulk head to close it off, with plexi or something for the rear portion.
bobing the top is easy compared to getting the metal to look right, I popped out the rear windows and made new ones out of plexy glass, I just used fiberglass to fix the rear.
just do it you wont regret it.
ok, now that i reread what you wrote the pics i put up are nothing like you want to do, you want to shorten it down like a dualcab and them have a mini style bed in the rear?
I have considered a bob, but would want to cut down the fixed window and leave the sliders available for the rear seat passengers......wonder how hard it was to cut that glass?

I used plexyglass to make the windows and bent them with a propane torch they came out okay but I wish I could of found the heat gun to make the curves smother. thanks for the pic foxfab
I checked into this and its not possible. You can't cut tempered glass!! If it snot tempered then it cake but all auto glass nowdays is. Atleast that is what all the shops I talked to said. They did say that you could get custom glass- bent, tinted and tempted for like $300-$400 each! Not feasible on a trail rig.
Although I believe that there is a way to sandblast a scribe line into it but I couldn't find anyone that knew what I was talking about. one of you local hot rod shops might be have the answer.
and bobb the rear to about a foot or so longer than the top to be able to throw tools and crap back there. Basically a 2 door, enclosed 4 seater, with a VERY small bed.
That is because this thread is five months old. There is a thread further down the page where Rick copied the text from the above articles, but it does not have any pictures of his work.
Here is a link to some pics of a bobbed runner hard top. Ron (RedRunner) bobbed the back of it and used plexiglas or similar for the back side windows.
