Cold starting ?'s/ starter relay bypassed

86 runner, 22re, 311k when i bought it last January. 328k now.

1. The PO had bypassed the ignition switch and installed a push button starter switch to start the truck. I had reverted back to the stock starting method soon after I bought it, only to switch it back 2 days later because it stopped working (probably why he switched it in the first place) Been that way ever since.
I checked the stock ignition wire at the starter with either with a test light or a volt meter (too long ago to remember) and when in the start position it showed power to it, but wouldnt start.
Hooked it back up to the push button and started right up. Didn't fuck with it again bc I was late for work and its been working since. I didn't think it would be the relay since it's showing power down at the starter.

2. It's finally getting cold here in TX and it dosen't like to start below say 50°F, and it takes a good 3-4 cranks (on a good day) to get the bitch started. And nobody wants to help me diagnose if the CSI switch is clicking on or not at 6am (I dont think it is) From what i read here and the attached yotatech link I think I solved my own problem that if i figure out why its not starting with the stock wiring the CSI should begin working?

Gonna tear into it tomorrow, but just need to know I'm on the right track.
It's Tuesday, dollar beer night, so don't have time to read 900 "my truck won't start" threads (And I'd rather be lookin at all the hot poontang at the bar than Pirate on my phone)

one thing you can do for the cold starting is a msd ignition. i live in south dakota, the other week it was 2 deg. and it started on the first crank

The problem is your CSI is not getting turned on. The only way it will get turned on is if you turn the key all the way to where it used to engage the starter.I found this out after about four years of having a hard starting on cold starts. I found this out after troubleshooting the whole system to find everything checked out perfect and on a 3.0 it is a bitch.

Here is my routine;

Hold the key all the way clockwise and count to four.

Release key to run position.

Press button and it should start right up.

I'll give that a try in the mornin. It's supposed to be 49° in the am. If that works I can get to all the other little crap I need to fix and been putting off, like the heater. I still would like to "fix" the problem, but if that gets me by a little longer that'll work.

The only way you are going to fix it is to get rid of the push button and go back to key start or wire a toggle into the CSI wiring.

I'm push button start, and have a fix for this. (had this fix prior to the push button start as well)

The Cold start injector is ground switched. And is controlled by the CSI Time Switch (expensive little bugger) The CSI only sprays when the Starter is engaged

Run a wire from the Cold Start injector (Ground side) to a toggle switch in the Cab, connect the other end to a good ground.

When you go outside and your cock turtle heads you know you need to enable the CSI.

Leaving the switch in the on potion will not harm your RIG what so ever, as I stated it only spays when the Starter is engaged. Only problem is on hot days with the CSI on you kinda flood the engine for a second (As it doesn't need the extra fuel) and it stumbles for a minute as it tries to recover from the extra un-needed fuel.

I live in Canada (The Great white north eh!) And never have a problem starting my Toy in the middle of winter since bypassing the CSI Time Switch.

Just another switch to remember to turn on/off (I am old and a child of the 60's), my way works perfect for me.

That is the way most everything on a Toyota is switched, at least everything I have worked on.

That depends on how you wire the pushbutton. I did not use any of the stock wiring on my pushbutton. The only thing my pushbutton does is fire a Ford type solenoid which in turn fires the stock solenoid. The reason I did it that way was that I burned out two pushbuttons.
