Exhaust manifold glows red hot after 3 min of driving...WHY

Its a new crate motor I pulled from an 83 pick up I got to part out. Tapped and threaded a knock sensor in and put it in my 87 EFI 4runner. the truck had no major issues before besides the starter would stick sometimes.

I have checked the fuel pressure, the AFM, the TPS sensor, new O2 sensor, the timing is on and TDC, the coolant temp sensor, No vacuum leaks, new fuel filter, new plugs and wires, intake plenum is super clean.

It runs good has a slight hick-up or hesitation at very slight throttle but pulls good at half to full throttle I'd say.

Why is the exaust glowing after such a short time. I mean its glowing from well above the o2 sensor all the way down past the flange and into the single pipe. Over a foot in length of glowing metal after a trip around the block.

Is it really that lean? Why?

Ill get a pic of it tomorrow night.

Unil then please help. What do i check next

Well, been my exp that the only way to get exhaust temps that hot is to run way lean. It would almost have to be a vac leak to get that lean. Is it hard to start? If so, does it fire right up if you step on the gas? These are telltale vac leak signs.

A friend did a rebuild and after putting it back in it did the same.
The timing was off just enough (he said said his was dead nuts on to).
Just a thought, double check everthing (to the manual).

the timing is probably retarded and firing after the exhaust valve is already starting to open....

two things tell me this...

1. it doesnt rev freely
2. exhaust manifold is glowing.

Like said in a few posts.
burning fuel is coming out of the exhaust ports causing the manifold to be too hot. Rich running condition: vac leaks, leaking or stuck injectors, retarded timing will cause late ign timing and cause burning combustion to exit too early.
Just try advancing the dist to see if it helps.

It was timing...

So I think there is a timing gremlin that lives in my motor. I had the timing perfect. then i tuned and fixed a few things a never checked it again. always check timing after any mods or fixes i guess.

Thanks for all the advice.
