Central Ca Wheelers: Trails open?
Looking at running some of the trails up 168 soon, but I'm not sure if they're open yet. I know Dusy won't be, but what about Swamp/Red/Coyote lake? Anyone know a number or website that shows what's open and what's not? Thanks.

Call the Dinkey Creek Ranger station. They'll tell what's open and ready to wheel.

I called and called but they never answered the phone so I just went up there to check it out. Still lots of snow and everything (Dusy, Swamp, Brewer, Red, Coyote, etc) is closed except Bald Mt. I was up there this past weekend and spent most of the time yanking and winching illprepared people out of the snow. I'm betting most of the snow will melt within about 2 weeks because the temps are pretty warm and as it is now the snow is only in shady and low spots.

I was planning on running coyote this weekend with some friends...do you think it will be open yet? How hard is Bald Mountain compared to Swamp and Coyote/red lake? also how long does it take to do the Bald mountain trali?

From what I saw, I really doubt Coyote will be open this weekend, but it's still worth a call. As for the difficulty of Bald Mt., it's not very, but there are quite a few obstacles to play around on that can be very difficult. However, I did see signs up about staying strictly on the trail because of environmentalists watching it closely to try and close and the rangers will write tickets if they catch you screwing around off the trail. So with that said, no it's not difficult (a 2wd with a locker and decent ground clearance could make it up). If I were you, I'd wait till some of the better trails open up. Darn late season snow!
