Whats up with the smog?
Hi all. I am an unfortunate transplant in Ca. I do not now or ever claim Ca as my home. That being the case I hope that some of you from MT and ID might give me some information on what I would be up against if I can get moved up there from "The Peoples Republic of California." I am wanting to do a 5.0l swap into my 89YJ before moveing. I live in Northern California and am in an "unimproved" smog area. This means that I only smog my vehicle when I by or sell it. I do not plan on selling it so I was not going to go through the hasle of getting the vehicle resertified by the State and thereby having to smog it.
My question is this, will I have to smog my rig if I can get free from the "PRC" and actually moved up there?

Well the missoula and kalispell area is where most of the out of state people go. Look into the area between helena and missoula or the southwest area around dillon. To the east of helena or bozeman you run out of hills pretty fast, but land gets alot cheaper in the eastern side.

We have been looking at Supperior and the surrounding areas. I'd like to be about a half hour or so out of town. Bozeman wouldn't be bad. It's very pretty, but a little spendy for us. Thought about Livingston, Polson, St Regis, Columbia, Dillion and Deer Lodge.
Obviously we don't know where we want to be yet. West of the Rockies is about all we have decided. My wife has been to most of those areas, I have never had the pleasure, but as long as I don't have to drive over an hour to fish, hunt or wheel. I'm good. We are looking at about five years down the road. Gotta pay of the debts.

Do you happen to know where the Veterans hospital is? I probably want to be no further than two hours from it. I am currently four hours away from the one here and it sucks! It's a whole day to do anything. The V.A. will cover my wifes medical only if she is seen at a V.A. hospital. And that only lasts untill she is eligable for Social Security. So I would like to be able to use the Bennefit while we have it.

The main veterans hospital is on the west side of helena at fort garrison. The area from helena to deerlodge is pretty nice, and the fishing and hunting is always five minutes away. That area still has a decent amount of roads still open for exploring the hills. There is only a couple places left open for good wheeling in the state.

Thanks th really helps. I am sorry to hear about the wheeling being harder to find. I will say that I am looking forward to being close to good fishing and hunting. I am sick of hearing people talk about the great deer they got that quartered to 85 lbs. My dog weighs more than that! I used to hunt when I lived in Wa and I miss the elk. I also liked how one would FILL a chest freezer.

The hunting is still good i shot both my elk 20 minutes from the house last season. You need to be here 6 months to get resident license out of state is spendy.
Its the hard core wheelling is getting hard to find, but the snow wheelling is great. There are thousand of old mine roads that go to some pretty awsome spots.

Cool, I am hoping that I will be able to hunt and fish for the majority of my meats. I know that with an elk, and some trout and salmon that would just about do it. Now if I could add a moose and a deer I would never buy meat. Do yall have phesant and turkey too? That would just about make it like Paradise for me.

The central to eastern area of the state is loaded with birds, and there is alot of public lands to hunt on too. Go to the web site fwp.mt.gov/hunting/ will have all the info you need.
sorry about the wait on the reply was out of town working.

No worries. I realy apreciate the info you have been giving me. I've talked to several people who give me nothing but grief as soon as they find out that I am in Ca. You would think it ment that I had a plague or something. I understand that there aee a lot of people comeing fron Ca and buying property and then bringing the Ca attitudes and problems with them. And that is unfortunate. I simply want out of the "PRC" and to be around decent people again.
What do you know about the NW corner of the state? Seems fairly rural?
