wild pig hunting
i figure i'll take advantage of the norcal forum here and ask if any one knows about any PUBLIC land that still has wild pigs on it. i keep having people tell me about "a friends property has a bunch of pigs on it" but when ever it comes down to going it falls through. hell, if you are a property owner and have some pesky wild pigs tearing up your land and want to get rid of a couple that could work too

i did some work a few years back on a communication tower off of hogs back road in red bluff. we hiked around a bit and didn't see any signs of wild pigs. i have heard quite a few people say that they are out there. i may have to take a drive out there one rainy day when i am off work. (it also may be a good excuse to come up looking for a flat deck trailer )

Some buddies of mine told me at the San Luis Reservoir (or right near it) Near Los Banos there is some Public land that you can hunt Pig. Only Bow and Shotgun though...

we went pretty far up there. i can't rember how far back it was but we hiked up the creek on the south side of the dirt road and came to a spot where there are some rocks to jump off. lots of graffiti all over so i guess that is where the kids go to party. this was probably 5 years ago now so i can't remember how far that was. i know we drove back there a long ways. i may have to go scout it out again.

Going in through Paynes Creek is a much easier and quicker drive IIRC than taking Hogsback Road. I've never really seen much sign (some but not a lot) once you get outside of the tehema Wildlife Area TWA. It seemed there were always a lot more pigs once you made it past the rock wall on the Southern end of TWA.

You need to go out to the Spenceville Wild life area. It's just on the East side of Beal AFB.
I have gotten lot's of pig's ( over 2 doz.) out of there but you have to be willing to work for them. Anywhere along the east fence line either side of the falls. Get maps from Fish and Game. It's a real short shooting season there, like Oct. to Jan. sometime and the horse guys run there dogs out there alot. But not out back most of the time. I used to turn them in all the time for runnin them where they were not supposed to be. When they do they fuck it up for quite awhile.

DFG is a great source for info. They will even send you some awsome maps as well. Call the Wild life manager for the areas you want to hunt. Sometimes they are alot of help and other times they have no clue. (you'll be able to tell)
There is 3K or so of new public land in the Sutter Buttes but i don't know if it's open yet. Hunter Liggit has way too many people, and hunting conditions have changed there recently. but if you go out the top over to the coast you can hunt Los Padres NF and there is a shit load of pigs there as well.

I don't have to look for them because the come down into my yard here in Hopland.
I think there is public land close by and they are thick just about everywhere you look. Check a map of Mendocino and the border of Sonoma counties around Lake Sonoma and Mendocino. Bob |

It sounds like you have a decent amount of public land available for hunting out there. I'd imagine you have a good variety of game as well.

I say the lake sonoma draw too. it is about 10 min. from the house. you can hunt in the area whever you want. we use dogs. the area behind the lake is huge, rugged,no people. Lots of pig.
The draw is for tha annual thinning hunt around the lake. It used to be a boat hunt but I do not know if they still do that. You could easily get pig there. Look up skaggs springs rd. and or garcia river. both areas are great for pig.

I know several friends have had good success at Fort Hunter Liggett. I have been camping there several times, lots of sign, but I never hunted there. I was going to bow hunt there last year but the trip fell through. Here are a couple links I had saved, they may be dated now...
