California Smog on 22R's.

So i got this Toyota, its a '84 with the carbbed 22R. The way it runs now, i know it wont pass smog. Im planning on at least rebuilding the carburator, but IM currious as to how clean these motors run initially and what to check for, replace or modify to ensure it gets pass the sniffer?

Any horror stories or success greatly apreciated, thanks.

tune it up, compression test it, adjust the valves. Make sure that the air injection is working and that the cat is good. There is a valve that turns the air injection on and off that goes out a lot. (ASI diverter valve) Check it to make sure it is opening and if it's not hog it out and make it open all the time. the cat will not work well enough to pass without the AIS working right, even if it is brand new. Also check that the EGR is working, all of this stuff is in the haynes manual and easy to test.

I never have any trouble getting the carbed toyotas to pass.

My suggestion would be to do what scott says then take it to smog. don't touch the carb till you know it's bad. a pretest will tell you. if the co is way high it will be the indication you need to justify a carb rebuild.

btw I would not suggest doing the carb yourself. carburetor factory at rosebud lane and auburn blvd are the best around. not too many people have luck rebuilding their own 22r carbs.

Are the stock carbs really that difficult? Ive rebuilt the carb on my subaru, and rebuilt my weber DGEV a couple times.

The truck runs pretty shitty right now. Im suspecting the carb, when I have it in the garage I will search for vacuum leaks and whatnot.

Any idea what this shop charges for a carb rebuild?
