tranny shop recommendations?
I need the th400 in my 79 chevy rebuilt, the flywheel and torque converter have more than an 1/8 inch of play back and forth and the tranny makes a very unpleasant noises when the truck is running, the flywheel put a nice deep groove in the inspection cover too.
I live in Port Orchard but can travel too tacoma, seattle, bremerton, wherever not too far for a good deal, would prefer to get it rebuilt and have a good warranty. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated. I am formerly a toyota guy but I traded my beat to shit yota and 600 bucks for this chev. If anyone cares it has 4in lift springs in front blocks in back, 34in swamper LTB's, d44 front, corp 14b rear with detroit locker, 17000 miles on new 350, and th400 obviously. I'm tired of it sitting I need to go muddin.

Since your runnin an auto tranny you have a flexplate not realy a flywheel. It is possible that you broke the flexplate and your tranny is still ok. You need to pull the tranny and inspect the flexplate to know for sure. I believe I got a racing flexplate from summit for like $150. Good luck!!

Yeah, like above I dont know that I would blame the trans. Sounds more like the converter to me. If your flexplate and coverter are moving that much I wouldnt think its the trans at all. Take it apart and I bet something will just fall apart and will be obvious.

Hey first thing first you could have something very easy as the torque converter bolts being loose. it will have a knocking sound that reacts to RPM. Good luck

Well I just got the tranny out and the flex platedoes have numerous cracks in it. Much thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
Anybody know if it is normal to have about 1/8inch of movement in and out on the trannys input(?) shaft? Also is there anyway to see if the torque converter is bad? The inside is clean and there is no visible damage to the splines but I am just curious. |

I got the tranny back in and t case on the tranny, finishing up the rest tomorrow. One more question though, I can put a pry bar in between the flex plate and the motor and push the flex plate back an 1/8in and then 1/8in back by pushing torque converter back by putting the bar between it and the tranny, basically the part that the flex plate bolts to has 1/8in play in and out.
It had play from the beginning I thought the flex plate was bad and it was, I am just curious if this is normal or if it is part of the problem. Thanks to everyone for the help! |

I was going to say from the beginning that the thrust bearing on the crank was worn out and allowing it all to walk in and out. There is a spec for how much play it should have, I would look it up and check it out otherwise you might just have it happen again. If it is moving an actual 1/8th of an inch, I would say time to pull the motor and go for a rebuild.

Have a buddy check out your harmonic balancer on the front of the engine while you pry with the pry bar. If the balancer moves back and forth as much as you say, you need to fix the engine.
