TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) - Tillamook County authorities say a 22-year-old man died during the Memorial Day weekend when his Jeep rolled down a steep mountainside after a tow rope broke.
Sheriff's Deputy Gordon McCraw says Eugene Baller of Willamina had been camping with friends in a heavily forested area east of Tillamook. Baller was navigating a narrow dirt road when the Jeep slid off the trail. With Baller still inside, another member of the group attached a tow rope to the Jeep and attempted to pull it back onto the road with his vehicle. The rope broke and the Jeep rolled downhill 75 to 100 feet, coming to rest against a tree. Baller's friends scrambled to remove him from the vehicle. They located a road out and took him to Tillamook County General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Baller's parents are Rita and Lloyd Baller. Rita Baller is a former mayor of Willamina. |

This is 4th hand info but the story I heard was.... 2am, dark, rainy slid off an easy but narrow trail in his 06 rubicon. The side of the hill was steep and he was worried about damage to his new(er) rig so he had his buddies in front hook up thier harbor freight special 'tow strap'. Which really was one of those braided nylon ropes with hooks. Guy in jeep jumps out to hook up rope. Gets in his rig and gives the ok to his buddies. Start to pull the jeep but then the strap breaks and the jeep kind of bounces or recoils back and starts to slide off the hill. Guy is thrown from the jeep and his roll cage crushed his chest as his jeep rolled over him. He wasnt wearing his seat belt, as reported by his friends later, because he thought it was just a simple little recovery move. Its really sad how it all went down. Not that tough of a trail, not that crazy of a move, bad judgment. Its the equal to dieing slipping on your front porch cuz you were in a hurry. BTW, all the guys called him 'Jeff'. This was in the Trask, NOT Browns Camp.
