New York Wheeling ?

OK so I've got an interview for my company....

Potentially Relocating from the UK to New York

So......
What's the wheeling like within 3 hours of NY ?
Where am I going to have to go to find rocks & woods ?

Are there many 4 wheelers around NY ?
Local clubs.
I want to live north of the city about 40 miles out so any advice would be appreciated.

Wish me luck cos this is every thing I've ever wanted.

Then who will sell me a decent 4x4 once I'm there ?

Am I even on the right board ? NY isn't very Southernly but it is East. Hey I studied geography.

Joe

there's basically one place to wheel in the north east other than state park's, which suck.

There's places to wheel but you need to know the right people (or take the easy way out and join a club).

Sounds like you'll be working in NYC. I've lived my whole life 15 miles away. North of the city about 40 miles out is going to be very expensive to live in.

New York Wheeling

Joining a club.........
Yeah I need to do that as I'm not going to know anyone out there and it will be an easy way to meet like minded yanks seeing as little old me won't know anyone out there.

SO what's joining a club going to achieve ?
DO clubs have their own secret sites ?
Can you give me some examples of clubs to contact ?

House prices
Looked on Realtor.com There are some nice 4 bed houses for $400,000 in the Rocklands area. ( Rocklands sounds good for wheeling / crawling )
Am I in the ball park with $400K ? ( cheap by UK standards )
I should have best part of $300K as cash down payment

Whatever help & advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

By Rocklands do you mean Rockland County? I live about 9 miles away from Rockland County. It's just over the river from NYC. It is a very nice area to live in and housing is reasonably priced. You can leave your car in the driveway and be in Manhattan in around 45-90 minutes during rush hour. It's a buyer's market in this area and you can do very well for $400K. Especially with 300 to put down! Houses aren't selling quickly so you can definetly do some bargaining.

However there is no public legal wheeling in Rockland County, or anywhere in NY for that matter. If you want to join a club, there is a club across the river in Westchester County that has acess to private land. They are called the Hudson Valley 4 Wheelers. I don't know them personally and do not affiliate with any clubs, I just know of their existance. I'm sure if you Google them you will find some more info.

More Wheeling places around New York please

Chris
Cheers mate. I'll google Dudson Valley.
So, if you don't belong to any of these clubs, where do you go ?

And Yes I do mean Rockland County as the train commute looks good.

Anyone else reading this.....

Where else / Who else can I go / join ?

Joe

There are a couple clubs and people are definitely wheeling out there. Check out Adirondack Jeeps, Hudson Valley 4 Wheelers, and Long Island Off Road.

As for joining a club, you will first, get a good group of people to wheel with, second, clubs do have private land that they have permission to use frequently, third, they know of local trails that you will never find on your own, and fourth, they will know where NOT to go so that you don't get in trouble.

I bought an acess permit to land in eastern PA owned by a coal mining company that encompasses about 22,000 acres over several parcels. I also wheel at Raucsh Creek, and I have friends who own land and have land acess in the Catskill mountains.

check out ec4wda.org for clubs in the area.

Like mentioned above, there is minimal public wheeling areas in NYS. There's a few snowmobile trails that open up in the off season for wheeling in the Adirondacks. However it is best to seek out a club in your area. Most of the really good places to go are on private land.
