North Carolina ATV Trails RE: UTV's/SxS's
Hello,
I was hoping you guys could tell me whether or not UTV's/SxS's i.e. Rhinos, Rangers, etc. are allowed on the ATV trails in North Carolina. I have been researching both hard copy and online and have not found any information on the subject. As a result I called the local forest office in Asheville and they didn't know either. I know according to the ANSI spec on ATV's the maximum width is 50" , with the SxS's being slightly wider. I am thinking the width stipulation would be the one most enforeceable. Does anybody know if I can take my Rhino on the ATV trails of the National Forests? The one in particular I was looking at was Brown Mountain. Thanks. |

I've read the brown mtn and nc ohv rules before and they're pretty vague. It's probably a gray area. But, I've seen plenty of utv's at brown (I've also only seen a ranger there twice out of the 30+ times I've been there).
:edit: Here's what it says Quote:
I don't know how fun a rhino would be up there though.

Thanks for the info! Yes, it is definitely vague. I basically came to the same conclusions as well. It is just gray. The rangers I spoke to gave mixed information as well. We'll just see how it goes. I'm new to the area so, all advice from the locals is great. Thanks man. Is it pretty rocky up there? |

It used to be. They pretty much bulldozed a few of the trails a year or so ago for the dirtbike guys, I've ridden a crf50 up trail 1/4/5/etc. I preferred it rocky honestly.
There are still plenty of trails with rocks though. If you go, let me know...I'm only about 20-30 minutes away. :edit: And to clarify earlier, by rangers I mean forest ranger not polaris ranger. Fwiw, on weekends it's a zoo...weekday afternoons you could be the only on the mountain.

I'll definitely let you know when I am headed out there. Thanks man. With having to drive far to get to good wheeling, I am turning my focus on to the Dirtbike/ATV/SxS thing these days. Just as much fun to me, with many more options out here in the SE, it seems. |

You're right in the middle of callalantee/tellico and not too far from the TN/KY wheeling spots as well. Have you joined NC4x4.com yet? SxS's haven't caught on out here at all yet, but there are plenty of places for bikes.

I did join up at NC4x4.com but haven't posted yet. To be honest, not really sure if I am going stay involved in 4 wheeling; however, will always be involved in in fighting the trail closures for the 4x4 crowd. Always have and always will. I have too many hobbies as it is and something has to give. When I lived in Arizona, there were a bazillion places to go wheeling within very close range. Moving out here changed that quite a bit. Maybe I'm just not used to it. We'll see how it goes. For now I am just looking to have fun that isn't too far away and a little less expensive.

I think I may have solved my dilemma.... Trade/sell the Rhino and get an RZR. 50" wide meets the ANSI for ATV's. Rangers won't be able to bitch about it being too wide. |
