How about a listing of trails in So Cal?
I think we are all kind of sick of hitting the same trails all the time. How about a quick listing of some of your favorites, maybe a picture or two if you have them.
To get it started I'll list some of the normal trails and links to maps of the area when I think it practical. Sorry, don't have pics on many of these online. Big Bear - Done most everything up there, but Holcomb Creek is my favorite. Gold Mtn is my clubs adopt-a-trail. General map of the area: http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&...9433&z=13&om=1 Truck Haven Hills - Just a fun place to play in your rig with others. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...UTF8&z=12&om=1 Azusa Canyon (A-buse-a) - If you have not been, you should check it out. Basically a wheeling area you pay a couple of bucks to enter and get stuck in the mud behind a small lake. Only place you will see huge mud trucks in So Cal. Teamwork here can be amazing to watch when water levels are low. (I think this map is about right.) http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&...4716&z=14&om=1 That should be a good start for now.. I'll let you guys fill in some more as I need to get off the computer now. -Wayne

I've did Cleghorn a couple of times. It's a fire road with a lot of optional lines. Some can get pretty interesting. It can be as fun as you make it. I've always ran it from the 15 to Silverwood Lake.

Let me change the pace a bit.My heart is really in exploring new areas, especially areas with history. So I love places like Calico since it has some great mining history and good trails. I have yet to see everything over there.
Calico This fun area is located out near Barstow and has a lot to offer. It was one of California's largest mining areas, and has some HUGE hardrock mines to poke around in. There are 2 popular trails, but many more dirt roads that are well worth exploring. Have you found the open pit mines? Borax mines? Flat tops? Almost driven into a vertical shaft by mistake? Then you haven't explored this area. (Please stay on the trails and do not liter while visiting!! That goes for all trails by the way.) ![]() Out near the dry lake: Old rail tunnel: And lets not forget an amusement park: (are buggies OHVs? They did not bug us.) Well endowed women:

One of my favorites is a visit to Panamint Valley and the area around it. Not a place to be in the warmer months, but an amazing place to explore, and some good wheeling trails. We have had a lot of trails closed in the area, but still lots to see and do.
Again this is an area that is filled with history, lots of mining, early ranches, etc. How great is this area? It actually has its own forum here on Pirate for a single trail that was in the area: http://pirate4x4.com/forum/forumdisp...aysprune=&f=90 If you are looking for the tougher trails, then Defense Mine and Isham Canyon would be them. Most other trails are more scenic or historical. Defense can be reached by SUV (I'm pretty sure) but the trail also has several options that are fun to drive. Cummins Cut is probably the best of these. Again I have yet to hardly touch the area and I have been out there half a dozen times. There are many cabins in the valley that you can stay at for free if you get early enough to secure a bunk, etc. Research on the area will net you lots of good info. Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...&t=h&z=11&om=1 Some pics from the last trip (some just outside the valley) ![]() ![]() http://aaaprodisplays.com/rotozuk/Panamint%20Valley%20'07_files/IMG_1803.jpg ![]() http://aaaprodisplays.com/rotozuk/Panamint%20Valley%20'07_files/IMG_1708.jpg -Wayne

Yes, good link. Similar to one I used recently on a trip in Colorado:
http://4x4trails.net/index.php But the 4x4trails site does not have much going for California. -Wayne

Superstiton is my back yard. I'd be glad to "host" anyone who wants to come down and wheel. No wheeling buddies out here in nowhere.
Sand, Dirt, Rocks, all together. Easy to hard trails, scenic. http://maps.yahoo.com/;_ylc=X3oDMTEx...2.962947&mag=5 Last edited by davyjeeper; 07-30-2007 at 09:15 PM. |

It's my favorite, not too well-known. June July August are night-wheeling months, if you catch my drift.

Here's some of my Superstition pix. The Blazer is mine, the K10 my brother's, the Jeep is mine. The Jeep and K10 pics where the K10 is stockish are old.

Bronco Peak
A buddy's and I did a sunset/night run up to Carrol Canyon OHV Park east of San Diego Off the I-8( Buckingham springs exit). It was a great run we headed out of Sd around 6pm and were on the trail by 7:20. It’s a mild trail throughout, bronco peak that is, with some harder sections if you wish. Great views along the climb towards the peak, the trail also has steep climbs and descents going both ways. Good short fun trail…
Coming In from the east side. ![]() The wedge, (bad angle) ![]() ![]() ![]() Sunset ![]() Average obstacle.. ![]() Coming up the west side hill of Bronco Peak ![]() ![]() Heading out. ![]()

Corral is scenic, but not much fun if you have more than 35s and 2 lockers. The weather is a lot better than here in summer though.
I take my wifes stock 4runner up there and tool around sometimes to get a temporary "fix".

My favorite desert area is the Superstitions. I also enjoy exploring the Fish Creek are of Anza Borrego. For runs closer to San Diego I enjoy Carveace trail and Corral Canyon.
Carveacre is off of Lyons Valley Rd near the Barrett Honor Camp.... The beginning of the trail.. ![]() Rock playground ![]() Pancake rock

You the man. Wanna go wheelin' sometime? I'd like to check out the Carveace Canyon. Is it more of a stock 4runner trail or a 46" tired Truggy trail?

I don't know if Hungry Valley was mentioned here... But it a pretty good place.
They have trails from beginner to Extreme. I've only done beginner to intermediate there. Not sure how good the Advance/extreme stuff there. http://www.all-offroad.com/DirtBikes..._HngryVly.html |
