Are green stickered rides legal on the trails you plan to run? If so I may be up for it

Not really sure what trails I would run This will be my first time up there...I have heard of some good one's but don't know where they are. I would like to hear from some people who have been up there and know more about the good trails and camp sites. Any camping by the water would be cool.
Not sure or not if green stickers can run up there or not? Jeremy

Yes you can run a green sticker vehicle: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardin...hv/index.shtml
It is going to tough to find camping on the water (I believe there is only one "camp ground" even close to the lake) but here is a list of the govt. run camping areas: http://www.bigbeardiscoverycenter.com/camping.html Trails to run: Gold Mtn and John Bull are both fun. Holcomb and Dish Pan/Deep Creek (if they are open). If you can wait a few weeks, IE4W's big event is in June ( they also have a list of other places to stay): http://www.ie4w.com/ [Edit] See this thread: /forum/usa-southern-california/678673-trails-open.html Holcomb is closed and from the pics, there are certain trails where you need to be street legal.

It's kind of mixed on the green sticker up there. Some of the common vehicle trails require street registration. The green sticker is more geared toward bikes and ATV's. The real problem is that the most common way to get to most of the trail heads, or between trails is to take the hwy, which isn't happening in an F-Toy. I don't recomend the IE4W Big Bear Forrest Fest (june 13-15) unless you like lots and lots and lots of Jeeps. Some experienced drivers, some not.

Thanks for the info, The camp sites look good, I'm from CO and miss being able to run a tuff ass trail and then pull right up next to a great camp site on the water The main reason I wanted to go that weekend is because I have monday off. But I would also like to run the trail when those guys are up there. Jeremy

Just went to Big Bear this past weekend. Ran Gold Mountain on Friday, Deep Creek on Saturday, and John Bull Saturday night.
Holcomb is still closed. Word is that it will be closed for a very long time. We drove by the entrance to the first rock garden and it was blocked off. Serrano campground is pretty close to the lake, right across from the Discovery Center. But like someone said, it may already be booked up for the Memorial Day weekend. |

Jeremy,
Are you towing your jeep up? I might be able to come up Saturday morning and camp over night. Is there Cell service on the trails? I'll have to see to many options at the moment (Mexico, The River, Partys, Girls half naked Or Dirt dirt and Rocks)?![]() JustRun post a Run on the 31st? Might be less crowded on the trails? Mike |

FYI: on the green sticker issue. I went up there this weekend with a buddy who was trying out his Yamaha Rhino for the first time. At the end of Gold Mountain there were volunteer rangers out there issuing warnings to green stickered vehicles. Apparently if you want to run Gold Mountain and then John Bull, the trails in between require a license plate.
Luckily the Rhino has an AZ plate.

Mike, not towing the jeep, only did that when I went to the hamemrs.
I understand if you don't make it, naked girls must be taken care of first. ![]() So it looks like after talking to my girlfriend we are going up Saturday moring and running a trail on Saturday and then camping sat night. Sunday we might play around a little bit...but then we are heading over to plam springs for the rest of the trip. She works for the Marroitt so its nice to not have to worry about paying for hotels when we go out of town. Anyone else going to be up there on Sat? I would love to have someone up to show us around. Jeremy

Bright side is she gets new boobs. Yeah me!![]() I might still do the Big Bear Fest. Mike |

I was talking to my buddy who said there is a trail that goes from Big Bear to JV? Said it is really cool to go from the pine trees and creeks down to JV. Is this true and if so how do I get to it?
It would be kind of nice since my girlfriend and I are going to Plam Springs mid sunday. Jeremy I willl be in this junk [IMG] [/IMG]

There is a trail (dirt road) that goes from big bear down to yucca valley with a possible detour by pioneeer town. I don't have a map handy. Try searching for 1N01 and/or Pipes Rd. I think those are at least part of the trail.
It should be pretty easy. I haven't been on it in a few years, but the last time was in my 2500 Dodge Ram so it isn't that hard. Nice drive though.

The trail from Baldwin Lake east to Pioneertown is Burns Canyon. it is easy the whole way but you can see the site of the old rose mine and stuff. From it you can add Pontiac Loop (medium to hard in places) and an alternate exit to the desert is Rattlesnake Canyon (medium). Rattlesnake takes you to north to about Old Woman Springs. Both are the trails that were used to move cattle from Big Bear Valley to the desert and back seasonally when that was a major industry of the area.

Yep, Dennis is exactky right on those trails...that whole area is awesome to see...not any hard core running there, but the scenery is outstanding...Rattlesnake Canyon is amazing - just don't be there on a summer day if there are any thunderstorms brewing up top! The flash floods that sweep through there have killed many an unsuspecting person...best to run in morning before the t-storms can get active (in summer).
As was commented, Holcomb Creek (3N93) is CLOSED, and will be for at least 2 seasons...major fire damage, very dangerous conditions for the public. Some of our Adopt A Trail clubs have been working on the trail, removing some hazards, but our Ranger tells us that it will be a couple of years before it could be opened. I may be up there that weekend, so I will watch this thread between now and then. As for trails, I'd recommend John Bull and Dishpan Springs! Dishpan was just re-opened (thanks to hard work of the AAT clubs!) this spring after last year's fires...heard it has gotten even "better" (read: harder) due to some erosion and rocks moving. But just know that whatever trails you do that weekend, you will most likely be joined by lots of people who want to get out there like you do...expect delays and waiting, and try to be patient and courteous, and most importantly, pay attention to the CLOSED signs and stay on the trails! Oh, and have fun! As for camping, call the Big Bear ranger station and ask if any of the Yellow Post sites are available that weekend (believe they are all first come first serve) - these are more remote and generally less busy than the closer-to-town ones... |

Thanks guys for all the info, hope to see some of you guys up there. I don't mind a lot of people. Nothing can be as bad as EJS, however with that many people it makes for a good show some times.
