Million Dollar Hwy with a 30' travel trailer
So how realistic is it to consider taking a 30 foot camper behind the burb from Montrose to Durango?
I have family coming and we will actually be towing 2. A smaller 21 behind the Denali and then the 30. We are going to four corners and Mesa verde and wonder how freaky that route is with a trailer? I want to leave Co Springs, head to the dinosaur fields in Flouriscant, then the ghost town at south park. Follow the River down to 50 then turn west to Montrose. Down to Durango, Cortez, Mesa, then the Grand Canyon. Come back on 40, hitting painted desert and petrified forest, great sand dunes, and home. 7 days

Semi trucks drive the route all the time. Make sure you have a big truck for your needs with good brakes. If you are a guy who tows with "just enough" then i would avoid it.

Wouldn't be a problem. Scary YES! But it's scary in anything. I would invest in trailer brake controller. If you haven't already. You can get them at Napa for like $60.
Had some friends take a 40' goosneck enclosed car hauler over it in the middle of winter in a blizzard so I don't see any problems in the summer.

Just be sure not to put a passenger side tire onto the shoulder as there isn't one... at all. In fact when I was there the white line was gone in spots with nothing up against the roadway, but air.

Make sure your brakes are spot on! Trailer brakes etc. I don't think pulling up the grades will be as hard as the descents. I drive a loaded dump truck and trailer all the time in the Telluride area. It's not the climbs.....its maintaining control and speed on the downhills. Start slow and stay slow.

Shouldnt be a problem, I get stuck behind someone else doing it almost every time i take that drive.
There are many spots where the only shoulder is lots of air. If you want to avoid red mountain/molas/coalbank passes, you could go over lizard head pass, it will pop you out near delores/cortez, then take 160 toward durango and stop at mesa verde both drives are scenic, but i prefer the red mountain scenery. red mountain lets you pay ouray a nice visit, but lizard head puts you semi-close to telluride (although it would be a bitch with a big trailer) when will you be passing through Montrose? |

Thanks every one. Will be towing the 30 behind a suburban 2500 4x4 with a diesel. The 21 is with a Denalli.
Both have electric brakes and controllers. We have taken the 30 up to Estes Park and into RMNP with out issues. We might skip montrose, not sure yet. Family coming from the east coast just think they would enjoy the mountains. If we skip Montrose, I will definitely take them on the silver ton rail road.

I don't know if you've gone on your trip yet but I would STRONGLY recommend skipping Four Corners. It's a long boring drive to the middle of nowhere and is usually a big let-down for those who go, nothing there but a concrete slaband some trinket (junk) vendors. BTDT and it sucked.
You will likely be white knuckle when you get to the Ouray side, it really deserves your full attention. |
