Personally I love the Montrose trails. From town you can be at the at the parking/airdown area in about 15 minutes!
The trails are short and hard(like a body building elf). They are west of town. Go west from the intersection of Main and Townsend. Stay on Spring Creek rd till you hit 58.75 road. Go right.(north) Stay on 58.75 till Kiowa. Go left on Kiowa(west) after passing 2 farms go left(south) on Rim road. Turn right at the water tank and you are at the parking area. There are 3 4x4 shops in Montrose. Hook up with some of those guys when they are heading out so you can find the actual trails...............those are harder to find, but they are awesome.

There are also the whole host of trails all throughout Silverton and GJ.
Even some new ones near Dove Creek on the Utah border.
