colorado wheeling season

been looking into the trails you guys got over there for the last couple years and was thinking about heading over for a month or so of wheeling action in the fall but wouldnt be able to make it out there till the middle of october at the earliest. would the good trails still be open or snowed out?

Colorado is a big place. What area of the state are you looking at? The high mountain stuff can be hit or miss that time of year. Places like Grand Junction and Montrose are perfect that time of year.

Come on over. There is plenty of wheeling to be had in late October and early November. Yes, the high Mountain passes might be locked in with snow, or they might not. Just don't get caught up there "with your pants down". You may not see your rig until July of the following summer.

The lower elevation trails should be fantastic. Most of those are the harder rockcrawling etc. Just off the top of my head there are trails in the following areas: Montrose,
Grand Junction, Rangley, Beuna Vista, Penrose, Gypsum. I understand there are a few around the "front range" I am not familiar with them.

You can also sneak down to Farmington New Mexico, and hit Moab on your way back to Cali.

Good luck and happy motoring.

Front Range area--Independence around Canyon City (Penrose). LeftHand Canyon around Longmont. Chinaman Gulch.

Kelly Flats around Ft. Collins is decent. It used to be harder, but they have taken a few of the obstacles out.

Holy Cross, and Carnage canyon are around Leadville area. HC is in the mountains, Carnage is around Buena Vista.

There were some steps and ledges in the "new" bladed section. It has been about 7 years since I ran KF. They bladed the tough section out so people could get their cars in there

Don't waste your time with left Hand Canyon. It is basically closed. The Boulder Ranger District was supposed to OPEN a new area before shutting down Left hand, Carnage Canyon. The new area isn't done and I haven't heard when it will open. It is also in an area that will make for a traffic nightmare to access also. It is a major Phuck up.

There has been a lot of nutswinger BRD 4x4 people defending the BRD, but as posted, the new area was to be OPEN before CLOSING Carnage Canyon.

I think it is going on 6/7 months ago that this was supposed to be done.

Snow came on some what early this year, I think we had 3 weeks in November where it snowed every day at 9,300' but most trails were still wheelable. Now we have bearly had any snow, I think I've had to plow 2 times in the past month. That time of year is great, not too hot, might hit fall colors depending on altitude.

Let me know when you come out, I'm down with wheeling where ever. I'm up in Grand County we don't have a ton of "hard core" trails but there are tons of trails up here with great views and lots of area to explore. If you need a place to crash assuming I'm still in the same house we have a "spare house".

Hmmm.... Well the very begining of the trail used to be quite difficult. And then was shortly follwed by a step/ledge area. The entrance has been changed dramatically but the step and ledges are still there. Theres also 2 ways to hit them. Then about 3/4 of the way threw theres another set of steps and ledges, but they bring the weakness. But either way Kelly Flats suck for rigs with 35's and bigger. The obsticles are fun, but only 100 yards long each and the trail takes on average 2.5 hrs. So your only really wheeling for like 20 minutes, if you do the whole trail. The rest might as well be a dirt road.

Ill also agree than Lefthand/Carnage Canyon is not worth investigating. Ive seen the new bypass and it looks pretty knucking futs but it aint open and those douchebags wont tell me when it will be either.

Stay south and you'll have a fantastic trip. Indy (Independance) is an amazing trial! I highly suggest that one, if you get a chance.

I wouldnt bother with kelly or left hand. Both need a yellow stripe painted down them. Kelly since its a dirt road, and left hand since it 3 lanes wide.

another plug for BV carnage. It really is a fun trail and that last climb out is getting nasty. every time I run that trail I somehow manage to add another dent to the body, although the last time I bent a wheel. It's worth the drive.
