Colorado best trails to drive/recommendations

Driving up to Colorado next month with the wife to spend about two weeks with family and do some camping and sight seeing.

I'm looking for some recommendations of some good 4WD trails to go see. Not looking for anything extreme, not into rock crawling (too expensive hehe).

Any recommendations big or small would be great

Most of the trails in and around Ouray are not difficult and very scenic. We try to spend a week every year up there.

Colorado is a big state. You wanna be more specific on your intended destination(s)?

2nd the traildamage site. Good info, if a little conservative.

I guess I'm used to Texas so I don't really think of others states as being BIG

But I will be staying with family in the Colorado Springs area so looking for trails with-in about a 200-250 mile radius.

I'm staying in Colorado Springs for the next 2 weeks for military stuff. If you'd like to have another tag-a-long let me know. I'd like to get out in the evenings or weekend and see something other than my hotel room. I have my D-Max tow rig, not the crawler, so I'd either have to ride the easy trails or hop a ride on a more capable vehicle.

Check out Imogene Pass. It's very scenic and you can do it with a stock rig.

It's not really a 4WD trail, but if you've never driven up Pike's Peak that is a fun trip also.

Regards,
....Mike

Imogene pass would be cool, except it's 7 hours away! How about something a little closer?

Imogene is very very pretty with very steep drop offs. One of my favorite is Hancock pass. It is easily passable in a stock vehicle with high ground clearance even. And is fairly close to the springs. (right outside Buena Vista)

You could hit up Jenny creek up or the T-33a plane crash trail both by Boulder.

springs trails

eagle rock is up old stage road behind the broadmore hotel in the springs. really easy to get to and a fun easy trail with a few harder obstacles. then you have independance trail system in penrose which may be harder than you are looking for but is about a half hour away. within 2 hours in buena vista are chinamans gulch and carnage canyon which share the same trail head. within 2 hours you also have holy cross, wheeler lake, and blanca peak. great trails with great camping and scenery. up by denver you have left hand canyon area which has some fun stuff. if you get time to go a little further go to grand junction where there is a ton of good stuff like bangs canyon, billings canyon, and 21 road and montrose. have fun

Cool. I'll try Old Stage road. Nice and close for an easy evening trip. I went up Gold Camp Rd yesterday on a tip from a local, but when I saw a Sentra coming down it I knew it wasn't going to much of a challenge. It did get me into some absolutely gorgeous mountains with wonderful hiking trails though so the trip was definately not wasted.

Just got back from a trip that wasn't much of a challenge for the truck, but it was WAY high on the cool meter! I drove to the top of Pike's Peak. What a spectacular experience! I got pictures from the top of the world and ate some yummy dunuts before heading back down.

Coming down, there is a mandatory brake-check spot where the park ranger tests your rotor temperature before letting you go any farther. Several cars where being pulled off to cool down. There was a Taco loaded with crap that was smoking in the cool-down area. Moron must have put it in Drive and rode the brakes the whole way down. When the ranger tested mine he got a puzzled look and tested it again: 55 degrees . I used 4-lo and the manual shift mode on the Allison to adjust speed so I only had to use the brakes 3 times for less than 2 seconds each. Man, it's cool having a diesel some days! I even got 15 MPG for the trip...

Run Medano Pass backwards, and arrive at the Great Sand Dunes.

Fun trail, with great scenery.

I think the independence trails arent too far away from CO SPGS either. Never been there, but planning on running the area in late july/early aug.
