Registering vehicle in AZ?

Lake Havasu specifically.

Almost done with an engine swap and its gonna cost a ton of money and time to get it to pass CA smog. I have family in Lake Havasu, AZ and may be able to use their house to register my jeep. Its a 1978 CJ7 with a 2002 Chevy 5.3.

What kind of hoops do I have to jump through to register my Jeep in AZ?

i don't know what the story is to regi here with out of state residency. this should give you some clue though. Trust any of those family members enough to title it in their name?

If its already an out of state vehicle you will need to take it to the dmv or third party title place and have them do an inspection. aka check the vin number to the title. they really wont inspect it at all. get it smogged which they will do for the 78, they dont care about what engine is swapped in. you need to have an address here as well

i've never heard of them requiring a smog check in havasu. if you in the military you can show them you id and say your stationed at yuma or fort huachuka or luke. i don't see why they would need you to prove residency but i've never tried from out of state before. i'm sure it's not unusual though seeing how many people have houses here and in ca

no smog check required in lake havasu, but they will do an inspection of your vehicle if it is not currently registered in Az. They will ask you for some proof of the address you are trying to use.

From what I know (I was going to do this with a home we have in pinal county, no emssions so my CJ could be legal) you have to be able to prove it as your current residence (your full time residence, that is). If you can't do this they boot you out the door. I think Maricopa County is the only county (and tuscon) that requiers a smog check.

here's an idea. just move to Arizona and then you can register it and all your other vehicles here and avoid all the headaches and california b.s.
