Yukon Gear & Axle on the Podium at "The Big House"
THOMAS GRADY OFF-ROAD RACER OVER THE TOP MOTORSPORTS NEWSLETTER THOMAS GRADY & YUKON GEAR & AXLE GET ON THE PODIUM AT CRANDON When Thomas got the invite to race with 15 of the best Ultra4 racers in the United States at the biggest off-road race track in the world he was thrilled and nervous at the same time. Although Thomas has been competing in and winning off road competitions for the last 7 years, at 16 he would be the youngest of the Ultra 4 racers. Having very little closed course "door to door " racing experience, Thomas and his team made a trip south to enter a 2 day MAORA short coarse race in Greenup, IL, 7 days before the Crandon race. We worked on the cars suspension and Thomas worked on his driving technique. At the end of the weekend Thomas was able to win 6 races . 3 days later we loaded up and headed north to Crandon Wisconsin. Crandon is the, Indy 500/Daytona 500 of the off-road racing world. The Crandon track is 1.5 miles long with long strait aways, big jumps and blind corners. The start is a land rush start, all 15 cars start at the same time on one line 1/8 mile from turn 1 which is only 4 cars wide. Qualifying on Friday went well Thomas got a good feel for the track and qualified 6th place. After Saturday`s practice Thomas said the car was perfect, don't touch a thing. Saturday`s race was rain delayed for 1 hour which turned the track in to a mud fest. Thomas did well and placed 5th. The mud was so intense we spent 3 hours with the pressure washer to get it clean. For Sunday`s race, the starting order of the top 5 was reversed so Thomas would start on the pole position. After a few laps Thomas found himself in 5th place and by the end of the race worked up to second place! It was a surreal experience to see Thomas standing on the podium at Crandon . When Thomas was presented his second place trophy the announcer said that his second place podium finish earns him a spot in the 2013 King of the Hammer “The toughest off-road race in the world”. A huge thanks goes out to all the people and company's that have helped Thomas get there
