La Paz Racing knew that they would have a bull’s eye on their back after winning their second consecutive Class 8100 championship in Best in the Desert (BITD) last season. The team came to the Parker 425 intent on running their own race and not being rattled by the competition. “Races are won in the shop,” explained La Paz driver Tim Casey. “We have a veteran team that has worked together for years and doesn’t get rattled.” These words proved prophetic as Casey and longtime navigator Bill Rante once again beat the competition in Class 8100 in Parker for the third year in a row.
Class 8100 is for full size vehicles with limited modifications that allow teams and drivers to truly showcase their talents in comparable vehicles. La Paz Racing campaigns a 2005 Ford F-250 Super Duty outfitted with Deaver suspension and huge King Racing Shocks controlling 37-inch BFGoodrich tires. After three seasons of running the stock Triton V10 engine La Paz Racing performed a heart transplant in the offseason to a factory fresh V10, but otherwise did not mess with a good thing.
Demonstrating that races are truly won in the shop, the team encountered no issues over the 425 miles of punishing terrain. “We were in second place on the last lap, but experience told us that if we pushed too hard we risked breaking the truck,” Casey related after the race. “Sure enough, at Race Mile 70 we passed the only truck that was in front of us as they sat on the side of the course.” Tim Casey earned his first class victory in the historic Mint 400 back in 1984. On March 23rd he will return to Las Vegas intent on another victory at this year’s Mint 400 as La Paz Racing marches towards their third straight Class 8100 championship.
