Update 20 Mar 2004 9:30 AM PST

Good morning Pirate people. The sun is shining, it's getting hot and the courses are ready to be challenged. The event starts at 10:00 this morning and we are ready to go. Unfortunately the live webcam is not working at this point. We hooked up a new camera, but its not cooperating with the satellite.

Update 20 Mar 2004 11:44 PST

It is amazingly hot out here today. We can't drink enough water to even sweat. The competition has started and it is going great though. There are tons of spectators out here getting their money's worth.

Kelly put on a great show on her first course of the day. She completed B2 with an impressive -5 points. The driver right after her rolled in the same spot she walked.

Adam "Skinny" Lunn is back in the driver's seat. He is a little sore today, but giving the thumbs up to get it. No time was wasted in showing that he can roll better than anyone else out there. On course B5, he was able to make 3 different rolls on course. Two of them were complete rolls back to the wheels and that didn’t stop him. He continued on and within feet of the finish, he flipped it onto the driver’s side. A little bruised from the full roll, the medic asked him, “What’s your name, where you at, and what are you doing?” just to see if he isn’t too shaken up. His response, “Adam, CalROCS, and rolling over”. Clearly he is having a great time.

John Hall made an interesting finish on A2. He was on course and close to the finish. He got a little crooked and flipped over. He flipped all the way down and through the finish gates without hitting anything and finished course. A finish upside down is still a finish.

Update 20 Mar 2004 12:15 PST

Jeff Eichstedt has made one of the best attempts at A3 today. A3 if you remember is the Money Line. It starts off with a 5 to 6 foot ledge to jump up with a small wedge to straddle and that is just normal course. There is also a bonus line right next to it which is similar, but has a huge crack going down the middle of it. Jeff made it up the normal line ledge, but stuck his tire in the crack and proceeded to break off an axle.

Bob Standage has been looking great out there in his red TJ. He was doing really well on A2. He squeeked through an off camber wedge which many have been having a hard time at. Shortly after though, he was making a climb, slipped a ledge, and rolled on over. They were unable to finish that course.

No Scores have been posted yet. We just did a quick run over there and nothing is available. People are finishing courses though with good scores, so it is definitely going to be a good competitive day.

Update 20 Mar 2004 1:50 PM PST

The first scores are up. They only have the Super Modified posted at this time. Team Shaffer is in the lead just looking at the total scores with a -1.

Bob Standage once again is looking really good. He just took A3 with a score of 31. He is the first of the day to make it today. He is now in the lead to take the money as this is the Money Line. $450.00 is possibly about to line his pocket. Can he keep it there though? There are several other rigs behind him to try and take it away from him.

Bruce Zeller completed course A1 which has been very troublesome for most and has rolled many rigs. The course is a very vertical course with a tight U-turn at the top which has a huge drop off on the driver’s side. Most people are trying to drive around the corner. However, speaking with Lil’ Rich, designer of the courses, he said his design intent of this course was to make them think a little. Instead of going forward through the whole course, the idea was that you would get to the top, then back down it to save you from rolling over or taking a cone. No one to this point has tried this technique. Its definitely a smart idea on the course. Despite the design intent, Bruce Zeller was able to pull off a 23 on this course.

Update 20 Mar 2004 4:00 PM PST

Well the generator ran out of gas on the 5th wheel and we lost satellite hookup. Pat from RP Films had to run to town to go get some more to continue the coverage. “Those damn $50,000 buggies can’t even keep enough gas so they have to use mine”, was his somewhat laughing comment as he ran out the door to get some more.

The Stock Modified courses are running slow. There is only one course running at a time, but they are going smooth. These courses are separated from the Super Modified and the Legends courses. They are more technical and designed to not break trucks, but put the drivers and spotters brains to the test. The cones are set up in such a way to potentially get the vehicles stuck if the competitors are thinking only 1 gate at a time. The key is to think about setting up for all gates.

Howard Vincent was just on course C3 and they looked pretty good going through the course. After taking the bonus line, he struggled a little trying to make a final turn to get out of the course. A few maneuvers and he was through the section with a good score of 19 points.

Peter Mazzoni just took A3 and in smack talking style. He took a few attempts at the crack line wall with no luck. He then took another shot at by just crawling it while rubbing the driver side tire into the wall. This time the thing just walked the wall with no problems. With progression points and minimal backups, he was able to get a 7 on A3. Peter is now in the lead for the Money Line and he may be leading the event. When Peter got to the top of the hill he said to Pirate4x4, “Best score of the day. What do you need? Bring it on Mike Shaffer.” Shaffer and him are running nearly identical rigs, so the challenge is on. Lets see what happens on day 2 when Mike hits the course.

Jeff (H8Monday) was having a hard time out on the same course trying many lines with no luck. Many backups and time running out, Maniac Mike, spotting for H8Monday, said, “Let’s roll it for the crowd”. They didn’t roll it, but they sure tried and it got the crowd going as they attempted it.

Mike Shaffer was having fuel issues with his fuel delivery. It appears that the fuel lines are heating up really bad and vapor locking. They tried changing the filter and the pump, but with no luck. Mike is done for the day with two good scores. However, his last three scores were a little less than desirable mostly due to the fuel problems.

Check out this clip of Mike and Lance coming down saving the rig from a near rollover. Talk about being on that edge of going over.

Damian Gidia was just attempting course B1 and laid it on its side and was able to drive out of it, but not before having a fire break out under the rig. It was quickly put out and no real damage occurred.

Damian Gidia laying it on its side on B1 and starting to catch on fire.

So far the event is looking AWESOME. The courses have been very challenging with some rollovers, but most have been making the courses. The event is moving very fast too. Recovery has been fairly quick when vehicles got stuck, so the day is speeding by. Most drivers are done at this point and day should be settled well before sundown.

Update 20 Mar 2004 9:05 PM PST

It’s now 9:05 PM and our system was down for quite a while. The satellite system decided to take a break and there was nothing we could do. It finally came back up with no help from tech support. We are uploading pictures now and the Gallery should be full of great shots. As you look at the scores, it looks as though the A-side courses looked to be slightly easier. However, Peter Mazzoni is racing right there with Jason Scherer only a few points back. If it is true that the B-side courses are easier, Pete is looking good to take the event. However, it is a different day and people learned many things. Can Pete pull off a second win? Will Jason get his first victory of the year? Or will someone come up from the pack and take them both out? We will have to see. The day ended well with all courses being finished early and people partying in the pit areas. It’s time to grub and get ready for tomorrow’s coverage. We are uploading pics now, so check them out in the morning in the gallery HERE
