JOHN HALL LEADS THE PACK AFTER DAY ONE WITH -37 POINTS! SHANNON CAMPBELL IS ON HIS TAIL WITH -34 POINTS.

The Battle for top honors at Cougar Buttes has been an epic one. The Top scorers are mere points from a perfect score, and are all within a few points of each other. Underdog John Hall and Nick Hall are leading the pack by 3 points after day one. The San Luis Obispo, CA brothers are ecstatic to be leading after taking a 4 month break from rock crawling.

UPDATED 01/03/03 1:55PM PST

Interview with John Hall, unofficial leader of the day:

Sam: "How does it feel to be in 1st place, ahead of such legends as Jon Bundrant, Shannon Campbell, etc?"

John H: "We've had great first days before, but we can't seem to keep it together in day two. We've got good confidence, and high expectations."

Sam: "Going into day two, will you be changing anything?"

John H: "I think I just need to keep my head on straight, and keep up our momentum into day two. I came here with $46 in my wallet. This is put up or shut up! I just need to tear it up tomorrow."

UPDATED 01/03/03 1:01PM PST

Jason Scherer attempted the bonus line that nobody else tried and made it on obstacle #A4.

While that was impressive, John Hall also took on the "impossible" line on course #A3 and made it look easy. John is on a roll and will attept the bonus line on A4. We will update you as it becomes available.

Quote from Jon Bundrant - "A little frustrated at the beginning I started off conservative to be consistent and didn't tackle 2 of the 3 bonus lines. However, the one bonus line we did take, we were successful.

When we came to the event, we figured the top competitors were Tracy Jordan and Shannon Campbell; however, John Hall and Jason Scherer have been putting up the challenge.

After ending the day with a -33, I feel I am back in the groove after the 2003 championship season and it feels good to be back in Tiny."

UPDATED 01/03/03 12:05PM PST

With the small amount of competitors, the day is going fast. Jon Bundrant is already done for the day, and as expected, he's kicking butt. Tracy Jordan, and Jason Scherer are also looking really good.

Chaz Murray is competing in his very first rock crawling event with his newly built rock buggy. He has virtually no seat time in the rig, but he seems to be doing very well for his first event. He may not win, but for a first timer, he's doing great!

UPDATED 01/03/03 11:15AM PST

Tracy Jordan is looking good, cleaning obstacle #3. He is definitely in the hunt for the top spot. He's gonna be tough to beat with his old school spotter Jerry.

Dustin Webster and his spotter get a little sideways on obstacle #4. With some brute force by spotter Jody on the spotter strap, they are able to straighten out and drive out of what seemed to be a sure 40 points.

UPDATED 01/03/03 10:27AM PST

Cody Wagonner breaks a front axle on his first obstacle! Cody is David battling Goliath with his stock mod class CJ5 in the Put up Event. Finishing a respectable 4th place in last year's Put up, Cody suffered a major blow to his scorecard by busting an axle in a brutal sidehill wheel wedging hole.

Jon Bundrant and Larry McRae ace their first obstacle with a perfect score of -2. Don Robbins and his brother try an unconventional line on their first obstacle. The stop watch was a little quicker than the Rock Tractor, and they timed out on their first obstacle.

TRACY JORDAN UNVEILS NEW ROCK BUGGY AT PUT UP!!!!

Tracy claims Jerry can carry him and the new buggy up any obstacle! Ok, so it's not his new rock buggy, but could Tracy Jordan's new chase vehicle could be a look at things to come in the future of rock crawling?

The area is filling with the nation's top competitors, and die hard fans. The weather is clear, cold, and WINDY. The wind has been relentless, and so far today is no exception.

Currently, the competitors are awaiting line up. Drivers like Tracy Jordan, Jon Bundrant, Don Robbins, Dustin Webster, Ron Schnider, John Hall, and not so known drivers like Chaz Murray are ready to run what looks to be very difficult, and technical obstacles.

Don Robbins is bringing the 'ole "Rock Tractor" out for some good clean fun.
