Monday: Canyonlands National Park - Elephant Hill Trail
By Lance Clifford
Monday morning started early at 6:00am, meeting the Poly Performance crew at Moab Diner for the Poly Performance JKOwners run down in Canyonlands National Park. 35 members of JKOwners.com showed up for this run. For those of you who have been following competitive rock crawling since the "good ole days" you'll recognize the name Kevin Hawkins. Kevin was our "tour guide" for this run. I used the words tour guide instead of trail leader, because he was just that, a tour guide. We did much more than just run a 4x4 trail.
Canyonlands National Park is about 80 miles South of Moab, so it typically isn't used at EJS. While it's a long trek, Kevin assured us the drive was worth it. He definitely was right! We pulled up to the trailhead, locked in and aired down. There were quite a few hikers staging at the same area, some gave dirty looks, and others were very friendly and interested in our Jeeps. Once we were on our way, we wound our way up some very tight switchbacks. The scenery was some of the best I've ever seen. Words can't really describe all of the awesome sights on this trail.
If you decide to make the trek out to Canyonlands, don't expect any extreme rock crawling, because there isn't any. This trail is more about the sights, and the experience. Once we hit the end of the trail, Drew (aka: GOAT1) held a raffle of Poly Performance swag for all the attendies. After lunch it was time for a little exploring. Kevin took us for a short hike that took us to some unbelievable caves, cracks and crevasses.
Pictures are worth a thousand words, and video is even better. In the photos you can see some of the amazing cracks that some of our skinnier friends were able to fit through. Apparently I am a little too large, because I didn't even come close to fitting through the"Fat Man's Misery" crack!
