Tuesday: Cliff Hanger with WARN
By Lance & Charlene
Winches are one of the most important tools to add onto your wheelin rig. We were invited by WARN Winches to join them on Cliff Hanger today. I wasn’t sure if I had been on that trail or not, and I will say I haven’t. It was another trail on the side of a cliff, but not as extreme as some.
A group of about 15 rigs showed up for WARN’s Red Letter Dealer run. These are dealers that are among the top of WARN’s distribution channels. They all own shops and live and breath wheeling. Also joining us was the Rancho Suspension group. It is fun talking to everyone and finding that they are from as far as Canada, South Carolina, and Florida!
We started the day out a little slow. We had a couple of blow outs before we even hit the trail. Lance had a serious blow out and one of the valve stem cores bent when airing down.
Then, a jeep had broken down within the first 100 feet of the trail head, was blocking the trail and needed to be winched out. Well, it was his lucky day that he had decided to buy a WARN winch! The WARN crew got to work and with 4 different winch points they pulled him out and back to the asphalt. It was a beautiful thing…the winch had never been used, they even had to unwrap the remote!
The trail was composed of about a dozen step-ups that had easy go-arounds and harder ledges and cracks. There were some newer drivers on the run that did excellent pushing themselves up some of the more difficult lines. The more experienced drivers took their vehicles up the more aggressive rocky sections. I was very impressed with the 2door Poly Performance JK that Lance was driving, oh, guess I should say Lance’s driving too. We motored up every obstacle!
When we reached the top there was a spectacular view of the canyon below. The colors and formations are amazing! WARN hosted a lunch, and then it was time to turn around and head back down the canyon.
All the step ups, now became step downs. It is always quicker coming down…slow and easy. As we passed a group that was heading up the trail, I looked over and it was no other than Walker Evans just hanging out on the side of the trail. A quick hello, and off to the asphalt. Another great adventure!
