Crowds thrilled by crawlers
Nevada Driver captures first stage of championship
By Darren Marcy/The Daily Times
Choke Cherry Canyon,
New Mexico - Threatening weather couldn't dampen the excitement of a huge
crowd Saturday as Farmington crowned the winner of the first stage of
the Rock Crawlers Association of America series.
Mike Shaffer of Carson
City, Nev., and Lance Clifford of Pollock Pines, Calif., teamed up for
the first time ever to win the first Goodyear/Skyjacker Extreme Rock Crawling
Nationals.
Shaffer and Clifford
finished with a total of 6 points for the weekend, to bring home the win
for Team Summit Truckstyle Off Road Racing.
The duo was thrilled
with their victory.
"I consider this
Farmington event the Dayton 500 (of rock crawling)," Clifford said.
"The crowd was great, very enthusiastic."
Shaffer agreed.
"Farmington is
the nastiest place and to win the first event is awesome," Shaffer
said. "Sitting in the winner's circle you can't complain."
John Gilleland was
second with 13 points, followed by Joel Randall in 3rd place with 17 points.
Ken Shupe was fourth
with 31 points and Jason Paule finished fifth with 35 points.
Shaffer and Clifford
picked up $7,000 with the win, but bagged contingency money totalling
$4,500. They garnered $2,000 from BF Goodrich for running off-the-shelf
Mud Terrain TAs, $1,000 from Summit Truckstyle, $1,000 from Skyjacker,
and $500 from Advance Adaptors.
Shaffer drives a custom
tube-frame chassis powered by a mixture of Suzuki powertrain products.
Dana 44's dole out the power through ARB air lockers and CTM u-joints
to 37 inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain TAs on 17 inch Trail Ready beadlock
rims.
The team is also sponsored
by Shaffer's Offroad in Carson City, Pirate4x4.Com, and Roggy Enterprises.
The duo rolled the
rig twice, but was able to get it back on it's wheels both times without
accumulating any points.
The first time, Shaffer
was able to spin the tires and get the rubber side down, but the second
time, he climed out of the crawler and helped Clifford push it back over,
jumped back in, and made the climb.
