Superior Axle 11:00 PM Update

St. George, Utah (June 17, 2005) Shannon Campbell took his Campbell Enterprises LS1 powered rock rig to the Big Boulders at St. George and led of the pack of Super Modified Division after the UROC Pro National Series teams completed five of the eight obstacles today. We caught up with Shannon Campbell about 10:00 PM while he and his crew were prepping their rock rig for Saturday's action. Campbell said, "Ah, we got lucky today and with Tracy, JohnnyG and and those other guys close, anything is possible tomorrow when we get closer to the main event. If you remember, I gave away the main event at the Phoenix competition and we're hoping not to do that again." Campbell was smiling while drinking an ice cold cerveza.

In the Modified Stock Division On Track Krawler Team's Dean Bulloch was the leader after a hot dusty day in the dirt at the Big Boulder Bash. Bulloch used his Klune V to crawl his Suzuki to the top of several obstacles this afternoon and tomorrow he'll be working all day as the Modified Stock Division will compete in five different obstacles before teams are determined who makes it into the main event. It wasn't easy to hunt down Bulloch tonight, but once we did he said, "The competition is fierce in our class and its still anyone's game. We're heading towards making it into the main event and then we'll hopefully make some things happen and get to the podium."

Saturday's action start's at 10:00 a.m. and we'll provide you with the latest from the Big Boulder Bash as teams aim to qualify for the main event.

Superior Axle 6:30 PM Update

Superior Axle 4:30 PM Update

St. George, Utah (June 17, 2005) The wind swept dust filled Big Boulder Bash continues to see carnage in the steep canyon just outside of St. George, Utah. Toyo Tires sponsored Matt Woolley rolled his moon buggy twice and suffered a minor injury to his left leg. His suffered a blown shock on the right rear and some minor cage damage. His crew said he's done for the day with the damage and minor injury.

Walker Evans continues to prove he is one bad-azz competitor as he rolled his Campbell Enterprises built rock rig very hard suffering a bloody nose. But the off-road racing legend forged back into the fray even though he scored a +40 on that obstacle.

Beard's Jason Scherer rolled "Tiny," the world famous single seat moon buggy, on a steep boulder, but both competitors teamed together to roll the Nelson & Nelson built rock rig back onto all fours and where they raged hell on the obstacle getting to the finish gate with only two seconds to spare.

Don "The Maverick" Robbins commented the course obstacles are too short and lack creativity in the layout. Robbins said, "This is sort of like follow the leader trail stuff versus good creative difficult courses. I wish it was a little different."

The weather conditions are playing big havoc here at the Boulder Bash. The wind continues to sweep dust from the Southern Utah plains into the event site canyon creating a hot dusty bowl for spectators, teams and UROC officials as well.

UROC reported to us that they were victims of a vehicle burglary several nights ago as the UROC semi-tractor trailer was parked at the event site and theives broke into the trailer stealing the UROC sound system. They had to rent equipment from Salt Lake City and the sound system only allows the announcers to provide very brief comments before the system shuts down on overload. Big Sarge said, "We're doing the best we can under the circumstances." One of the speakers on top of the UROC trailer caught fire, but the St. George Fire Dept. was here to put it out immediately.

UROC Scoring Official - Stephanie was having difficulty with the scoring computer and was unable to provide us the latest scores as of 4:30 p.m. As soon as we have them in hand you'll be the first to review them.

Superior Axle 3:00 PM Update

St. George, Utah (June 17, 2005) UROC Scoring Officials have just provided us with the first scores from Friday - Day 1 action here at the third round of the UROC Pro National Series. In the Modified Stock Division - the Lovell Brothers from Fort Collins, Colorado are leading as they have completed all three of their obstacles for the day. They have loaded their rock rig and scored +2 for the first day's competition. Dean Bulloch is sitting at +9 with one obstacle to complete. Brian Errea had a bad first day and ended up at +52 for the day. Errea said, "We rolled on the last obstacle of the day and had some problems. We'll be back ready to work hard tomorrow." Becca Webster/Rich Klein scored two +38's on two of their three obstacles today so they sit at +76. The carnage on the Red Bull Rock Her today was a fuel pump and fuel line that they took care of without a problem. Dave Schneider had a great two first obstacles and has +6 points and readying for his next obstacle.

Modified Stock:

1. Lovell Brothers - +2

2. Dave Scheider +6

3. Dean Bulloch +9

4. Aaron Clough +45

5. Craig Stumph +46

In the Super Modified Division the carnage has taken a toll on several teams. Rock Runner Racing's Jason Paule suffered a broken control arm and after repairing the rock rig he started to drive away and discovered they also broke a wheel and a brake line forcing them to jump into action to make repairs before the next obstacle. Paule has scored +43 after completing obstacles #2 and #3.

The story of the day so far is between Shannon Campbell and Bruce Zeller who are on fire here at the Big Boulders Bash. Campbell has scored -5 while Zeller has -15 after the first few obstacles.

The tight competition after the two top teams is just that...very tight. Here are the scores of the top ten at 3:00 p.m. here in St. George.

Superior Axle 1:15 PM Update

St. George, Utah (June 17, 2005) This just in...Superior/Pirate4x4.com/Toyo Tires sponsored Mike Shaffer/Lance Clifford are done for the weekend. On their first obstacle of the day they grenaded the Short Star motor in Mike's rig. King Pirate immediately asked, "Got any cerveza?"

Superior Axle 1:00 PM Update

St. George, Utah (June 17, 2005) The UROC follies continue at the Big Boulders Bash in St. George. Reigning UROC Pro National Champion Tracy Jordan should be named Mr. Controversy. Here's the latest. On his second obstacle of the day he rolled his rebuilt Campbell Enterprises rock rig out of bounds ending up on all four BFG Krawlers. UROC Judges/Marshalls ruled him out of bounds, but Jordan and his spotter Jerry Watson argued that they rolled out of bounds accidentally. UROC Officials ultimately ruled that the rollover/infraction was an accident, therefore allowing him to complete the obstacle even though he went out of bounds. After he rolled through the finish gate Jordan high-fived the judge smiling from ear-to-ear.

Bender - Why are you smiling? A desert chick at a rockcrawl. The queen of the Big Boulder Bash!!!

In other folly news, Goodyear's Joel Randall was competing in his first obstacle when UROC CEO Ranch Pratt saw that one gate cone appeared to be to difficult for Randall to make it through the gate. Pratt picked up the gate cone and removed it from the competition allowing Randall and the remaining competitors not to have to negoatiate the cone. Hmmmmmmmm...Randall was the first of the competitors to attack that obstacle, therefore no other competitors had run the course or attempted to get around that cone.

We have no scores as of yet, but the tension is building as teams are fighting for every single point here at the Big Boulders Bash.

Superior Axle Noon Update

St. George, Utah (June 17, 2005) Competition has just started here in St. George and the obstacles are interesting to say the least. Many competitors raised their eyebrows to a couple different big drop off's. Karnivore Rock Racing's Nate Williams exclaimed, "Have you seen those drop offs? They're big! The obstacles are short and it seems you better be on your game right away. The climbs aren't too bad, but my first obstacle is gonna' be tough"

Set in a steep canyon with obstacles arranged on each side, the courses are short with one main drop off or technical climb on each course. Tracy Jordan commented, "We're either going to be scoring big negative points or lots of penalty points."

Rough Country, Fabtech, TeraFlex, BFGoodrich, Toyo Tires, Goodyear, Maxxis and more are all on display here in the Boulder Dustbowl at the bottom of the competition site. The steep canyon is south facing towards the Virgin River Canyon and the wind is blowing at a stiff 10-15 miles per hour. At times gusts have been really strong blinding the vendors set up in the Boulder Dustbowl. Temperatures are hoving at a mild 88 degrees with a forecast of only the mid-90's through Saturday.

A small crowd is on hand here at the Big Boulders Bash and St.George's finest are also here to control the crowds. St. George Fire Department has personnel on scene dressed in full fighter gear prepared for any emergency. We spoke with a couple of the firemen who told us that recently St. George has experienced some big brush fires and their presence here at the Big Boulders Bash is preventative.

King Pirate Lance Clifford, also known as "Chicken Bone," here in St. George area said, "This place is moon buggy heaven with these big drops. Any rock rig that has a rear engine configuration should be scoring some negative points. We asked Chicken Bone how many points he deserved for his antics last night at the steak house and he said, "You know I'm the champ!"

The competition is underway and we'll provide you the latest in the next few hours. Stay tuned.
