I think the main problem is really the parts drying up in certain areas. I know around here I used to see samurais everywhere and every local JY had anywhere from 4 to 12 in at anytime, now a ton of the JY's have scrapped them when metal was high and tweakers picked up all the ones sitting in backyards. Rust killed samurais in my area but drivetrain parts were easy to find.
Definitely, samurai's used to be the cheapest of the cheap way to wheel.
$500 samurai, basically free spring over, 5.xx track kick gears from the junk yard (or splurge on some $5-600 tcase gears) ~$200 on some used 31-32s and you could make a lot of much more built rigs look stupid.
Now people was $4k+ for anything that runs.
