G506 Build

Hello all, I'm new to the forum but I have lurked for years and have collected knowledge for other projects. My latest project is a G506 1.5 ton military truck from the 40's. I've seen a couple of threads regarding this truck and I'm hoping y'all can help me out, as I've never messed with anything this old.

The truck was my father-in-laws, and has been sitting in a pasture for the past 20 years. I've had my eye on it the past few years and have done some mild research on the truck. I pulled it out of the pasture last week and I'm getting ready to start a resto-mod project.

As it sits now there is an L6 in the truck, it's not the original, and when it was parked it was running off propane. The transmission is stuck in neutral, I can't move the shifter at all. I'll pull the engine and tranny and tear down the tranny, but I'd like to bolt the tranny to a 350. Is there a chevy engine that will bolt to this tranny? And can the tranny handle that power? I'm not looking to do 70mph in a huge truck, I'd be more than happy to make runs into town at 55. The 350 would just be for simplicity, easy access to plenty of parts, and decent power output.

Part two would be the height of the truck. I haven't done a whole lot of research on the military tires, but I'd like to see some 14.00-20 XLs on this truck. Am I going to be looking at different wheels for this? Is there enough gap between the dually tires to run this setup?

The truck will see dirt roads, muddy pastures, stump pulling, I'd like to rig up a dump bed for work around the house, and I'd like to drive it to town to scare all the high-toppers and yuppies in their Prius's.

I appreciate any and all help anyone can offer! I'll post some pictures later in the week

Can you throw us a bone? Can you ID the L6 that is in it now? You say it's not the original engine, how do we know the trans is or is not original?
