Question LS-4L80E Reverse Pattern Options - Opinions Welcomed

Helping a fellow driver with his build:

Him and I are building a 2003 4L80E from a 6.0 HD truck that is going to be rebuilt and put into a truggy with an LS1 5.7. Current transmission is a 4L60 that seems to need rebuilding every few seasons, so we're upgrading.

I'm curious what experiences you all have to share regarding your 4L80E shifters and/or valve body options?

The desired pattern is to have 1st gear and Reverse close to one another for trail riding, but this doesn't have to be a full manual option. The driver would still like to be able to put it into Drive and relax when getting to the trail head 4-5 hours away via highway.

If memory serves, it's currently set up for P-R-N-D-3-2-1, we're in search of a solution that allows P-R-N-1-2-3-D or something where R-N-1 is easy to get to. I think we can control whether it stays in gear via my HP Tuners software and tuning around the parameters for shift points when in certain gear selector ranges.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a side-tangent to avoid starting another thread, this driver wants to change out his transfer case at the same time with a range box. He has a line on a married Ford NP205, but would like to explore the NWFab Black Box or Offroad Design Magnum box. He's looking for that 2.72:1 range box option before the 205.

My questions, as his tuner and helpful hand during the build - how does the VSS continue working with the 411 PCM and switching over to the 4L80E? His current NP241 has a VSS in the tail housing.

Thanks

When you're after a reverse pattern for R-N-1, is full manual all that's available?

Yet another example of manufacturers not making what we want. If you want something built right you have to do it yourself. Unfortunately I am not up to speed enough in electronic transmissions to know if you could program it to shift the way you want or if you would have to custom build your own valvebody to get both a reverse pattern an retain drive.
