drw rear end vs srw

I have a 97 2500 cummins 4x4 single rear wheel. I am considering converting to a dually, and was told the drw dana is narrower than a srw unit of the same year. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, but chassis cabs use a different width than the pickups so there are actually 3 different widths.

Based on my experience the DRW is wider.
I can't speak to the cab chassis stuff but the DRW Dana 80 I removed from my 01 3500 was 4inches wider wms-wms than the SRW D80 ('02 axle) I replaced it with.

Ok, I double checked it since I for some reason thought this was about D/W series when I first read it and at least up through '96 the SRW and DRW D80 is the same. The '97-'01 catalogs don't specify DRW or SRW, only gear, differential and model but I'm reasonably sure nothing changed on the width throughout the BR series production.

If that is the case it's in the hubs alone and not the housings since they both have the same part number.

this is what i have found

"have had all three on the floor together ...

if the SRW axle is used for reference then

the cab and chassis axle is 1" narrower per side 2" narrower over all than the SRW

the dual wheeled with a bed axle is 1" wider per side than the SRW 2" wider overall "

this is quoted from cummins forum when i was looking for info on converting my cab and chassis

It's been a while since I measured them, but the way I recall, the dually is wider from spindle end to spindle end.

That would be in direct conflict with the parts manual.

The WMS may be the same, I can't say for sure, but the DRW and SRW use different hubs. The DRW hubs wheel flange is recessed more to the inboard end of the hub. The SRW hub has the flange more to the outside.

That's what I was saying that the difference must be the hubs. The parts manual listed the same part number for the axle housing for both SRW and DRW trucks.

No measurements, just short part descriptions, part numbers and quantities. The hubs appear to be the same also, again for at least the '94-'96 models:

HUB, Brake Drum
52007912 2 R3,8 w/13x3.5, 8-9/16" Stud, w/or w/o Dual Wheels

...there is also some possibilities for swapping wheel studs from one axle to another, going drw to srw and vice versa. I don't know the exact years that 'qualify', but I can lend these examples -

1982 Dodge D70 dually rear axle, with 5/8" studs. The 5/8" studs can be replaced with the 1/2" studs from a '92 3/4-ton Cummins or gasser Dodge, or with a set of the 9/16" studs from a front D60 Chevy hub, depending on which way you might want to go. Also, the 1/2" studs in a 92 Dodge 3/4" ton srw front D60 hub can be replaced with the 9/16" Chevy studs...or the 5/8" Dodge studs for whatever reason.

Case in point. We put tons under a friends RC - 60 front, 70 dually rear. The front is from a '92 Dodge D60 dually; we took off the dually hubs and bolted on a set of new Chevy srw hubs (with factory 9/16" studs). The dually rear was from an '82 D350; replaced the 12x3 brakes with a rebuilt set from a srw D70 from a '92 W250 Cummins Ram - exactly the same brakes btw. The dually hub has a bit longer snout. We poped out the 5/8" studs and pressed in Chevy 9/16" studs to match the front. Now the truck has matching 9/16" studs at all 4 corners, nice and strong, and because the rear is from a dually the axle is 1 inch wider per side, making the rear track match the front. Sweet

I'm looking into buying a 98 3500 4x4 DRW and converting to a SRW. Maybe we could just trade hubs if its as easy as that? Truck will either be in SC or in Las Vegas. I will also have some nice Dually wheels/tires/bedsides I'll need to sell as well. Let me know if you're interested or if this would even work?

I'm only thinking about this asspain because finding a 98 12V 5spd 4x4 crew cab is pretty much impossible.

Does anyone know if the 3rd Gen rims will fit the 2nd Gen Dana axle lug pattern? I think it's the same, but not sure.

One thing that I'm confused about. On a Chevy a 78' year era trucks for example, the DRW rear axle(Dana70HD) is 5" wider than the SRW axle(14bolt), 72" vs. 67". This is for a Dually truck with a bed not a Cab and Chassis. I think that there is possibly some miss-information on here. Because if the rear DRW axle is the same as the rear SRW axle, than the inner dually tires would hit the inner fenders, right?

The '70s and '80s era Dodge trucks are about the same as GM. As far as the BR series, I can only post what the Parts Manuals tell me. If you want actual scans, I can post that too. Keep in mind I am only dealing with the D80 rear axle, not other models.

Pay careful attention to the "dish" of the brake backing plate between the narrow brakes of the SRW and the wider brakes of the DRW.

Note for ctdjeeperman, yes, the third gens will fit. I have them on two SRW 2nd gens, and a DRW 2nd gen.

another thought with these trucks wasnt 3500 only dually? i believe so because if you look for a 3500 on car-part.com it doesnt ask if srw or dually.

also the 2500 dana 80 is supposed to be different that the 3500 having smaller spindles

ctdjeeperman a 98 crew cab is impossible unless you find one of the hand built ones

Dodge never offered a Dana 80 until 1996. You must be thinking of Dana 70's.

By Crew Cab I meant the factory 4 door (ext cab) where the back small doors actually open out. I'm not sure what the actual name was, but it's the cab config 90% of the later 2nd gens had.

ive got a 94 and a 95 with dana 80's, both from the factory. both are srw, std cab.
