SuperBeast

So after photobucket helf my photos hostage, i stopped posting build thread stuff. However i have found a new photo host. Hopefully imgrr will be ok. Let me know if there is a better site.

Here is my most recent build. Its a 1994 2500 ram. This is the VERY first truck and vehicle i owned. My parents came home one day and told me i have a truck payment and needed a job to pay for the lean. That was about 15 years ago. I took immediate ownership and responsibility as a senior in high school. I built it up with a 8 inch lift and 39.5 swampers. I was 19 and living the dream. Young. Dumb. And i had a cool truck. ... The dumb part was me ending up selling it due to being young and getting tickets for it being lifted too high. The officer had no idea where to measure. But that was the start of my journey into the offroad wheeling world!

So i had a few lift tickets. Sold the truck and regretted it after i learned what the truck had in it. A 12v cummins long bed standard cab. Sold it for $8800 in 2003. 13 years later i tracked it down. It had been through a number of people. And completely neglected. A serious fuel return line leak, no fluid in the trans, **** steering , broken window that let in the weather for god knows how many years, cab floor spot welds broken and rusty floors, bed held on by 2 bed bolts, bumper held on via turnbuckle, :der: , interior door panel and window rail broke/ hanging .. and no god ****ed radio.

Fast forward a lot of work: installed nv 4500 trans, adapted. Ford np271 t case to mate up to the nv4500, rockwells, rear and front to be 5 linked, fixed door panel and window, rug doctored the carpet. Patched the floor boards, bucket seats from oriellys. Cut the fenders off and removed the bed. Sorta modeling this after the kodiak dodge. A huge influence. Im co sulting with Dusty when i run into questions that revolve around "what would you d, or what would you have done differently?"

Pics to come soon!
Here it is when i sold it im 2003.

Here are the ouput shafts the smaller one is the np241. The larger is the np271 from the ford case i converted.

Swapped out the input shaft. Learned that the np241 and np271 planetary units are the same! It slid right in. No problem!

Rear pinion brake will be used for a parking brake. Im going with discs around all 4 corners. Willl include in a later post. Still waiting on parts.

Parallel 5 link rear. Currently working on the same for the front.

I wanted to brace the link btackets so.. i built a x member. Had to notch it for the driveline.

Nv4500 swap was a breeze. The pedals (clutch and brake) were robbed out of a junk yard gasser. Only needed the rails with them and boom. Done.
Went with a south bend stage 2 ( 800 ft lb rated i believe) clutch and flywheel.

Seats and interior. I ended up welding the stock brackets to the seat brackets. It sits a tad high. Ill adjust it later if i dont like it.

The nv4500 and np 241 before installed

5th gear retainer

Mohawked the front. I bought the rear already ssembled and spooled.
There was a lot of welding involved!

Some eye candy parts!
Kings 16" for the front.

Ballistic fab parallel link parts

This x member took forever to make!
But its done. Paint is drying and im getting new hardware tomorrow
The np 271 sits further back and would likely hit the front of the xmember.

X member on !

So i am just about ready to wrap up my front link mounts.
Before i fully weld them up im hoping to get some input on the location. The center of the bottom link bolt hole is approximately at 33.5 inches from the ground for reference.

I plan to build a crossmember in between the dropped links. The t case will get a poly bushing to support it in the middle somewhere.

Life got busy for a hot minute,. Thanksgiving, lots of snow, work, being an adult, learing to sharpen drill bits... :i3:
Finally got back at it. The front may come up a smidge and think i may move the brackets forward enough to use that upper link on the bottom

Just waiting on some parts to ship in for the lower link brackets! Cant wait to get it sitting on its own weight

4 linky

The lower links are a bit shorter than i intended. However .. This will keep the pinion pointed at the t case. I suppose i was unable to avoid a cv joint driveline.
This is approximately where the stance will be:

Thats it for now. Waiting for funds to arrive to get a full hydro psc setup.
Plan is to get a tube bender after, then find a hydraulic e-brake for the rear pinion brake. Ill be looking to build drivelines after that.

Very nice build and it does remind me a bit of Dusty's rig. I sort of miss having Dusty around here, he was always posting interesting tech and other cool stuff. What are the plans for the future?

Dusty just put up the kodiak for sale. He started a business, Northstar Fabworks, and is hopefully going to use the money for a new high tech plasma table! Ill get some pics of it when he does. Dusty built a sick 4runner, and got into the side by side game. Lots of money tied up in those tiny rigs! Well the 4 runner is now a stroker 22 re, with chevy tons, 44 boggers w beadlocks, and 4 linked front and rear.
My plan is to build a trail buggy that will take me deep i to the bush. 34 gallons of heating oil or offroad diesel will take me plenty of miles! I may get into the swamp stuff later after testing, tuning and ags are acquired. Ive also got plans for tube work. I also want to get a gps capable double din radio for mapping out trails!
If i ever come across axles techs, ill definitely run them and see if i can make this thing street legal, just to be able to drive to the trail. I like the idea of keeping the xml tires because they are so damn thick and very difficult to puncture. Ill be groving them a bit. Ill look into upgrading axle shafts later.. when these break...

Cool build! I always wanted to take a few days or a week and hang out in Fairbanks to see some of you guys. I always just passed through with an occasional overnight if the plane didn't go.

Been thinking of heading back up that way for work. Gotta call the office one of these days and see what's going on. Haven't been up there for six years now I think.

Thanks!
Its motivating myself lately that's been slowing me up. Heating the detatched garage/ shop during the winter costs money. When i do, i have to make it count by committing longer periods to work in there.

Just put 3 led lights in last night. Talk about bringing daylight. I was having a difficult time adjusting to seeing shadows (everything was just fawkin dark before)
