wiring help Warn M8274

I bought an old jeep with a (1975)working M8274. IT was in bad shape. I re-wired it just as the diagram warn supplied. I painted and polished. Put it back together and it didn't work. I re-did all the contacts, made sure my motor ran by hot wiring it, it spun in both directions. I decided it was a ground issue, as the - post from battery attached to one of the long screws in the motor housing. It didn't look correct, but found no other place to attach to motor. To test the theory, I ran a second - wire to battery from the solenoid tray, and it began working, only in spool in direction, wont spool out. This leads me to believe its a solenoid issue? Does the solenoid tray need to make good contact(ground to) the motor for this to work? any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Yes. Or run a tag lead from the tray to the ground point

I may be making a mistake by working on this as it sits on my wood work bench. should I be running a temp ground as I try to do this electrical testing?
