1987 Toyota 4x4 Van- BENJI

So roughly 2 and a 1/2 years ago I happened upon this stray... abandoned in some guys yard. I put an ad out for a 8" Toyota diff and got a call from some guy asking if a 4wd van rear end would work... I was intrigued, so I went to take a look!

When I got there I saw a neglected yard mutt.

I greeted the guy and he said I could take anything I wanted off it for a small fee... Just as I was about to ask how much for the whole thing, the guys wife steps out and starts griping about the eye sore it is. Sweet, there went any negotiating power he had. I had 900 in my pocket and he took it on the spot.
He said it didn't run... and as soon as I opened the engine compartment I could see why. A squirrel had chewed through the MAF wires. So, a few crimps later and a jump, I started it up and drove it home.

The odometer read 83k, it smelled inside and had creatures residing in it.

Cool. Now what? And then it sat for more than 2 years as yard art. Until a month and a half ago.

How I got it:

It came with luggage!

It also had a pretty thick layer of grime and dirt!

Then came the tear down...

About 6 weeks ago I rolled the thing into the garage and proceeded to just gut it like a fish.

The engine is a 4ye, which produces roughly 105 hp
They are still produced today! Used in Toyota forklifts throughout the world.

The engine got a minor tear down... in the vehicle. The engine literally sits under the driver/ passenger seat. After assessing what it was going to need, I dug in...

Rebuilt the alternator, PS pump, flushed the cooling system, replaced half the gaskets, tore the intake apart, fuel injection system serviced, replaced all the typical maintenance items (plugs/ cap/ rotor/ AF/ coil/ plug wires/ t stat/ belts/ hoses and etc..).

You have to be a pygmy to work on these things... it's tight space.

However after going through the engine and making it mechanically sound the results were rewarding. The thing runs like a top.

I'm gonna make a little camper van, fishing rig out of it!

I have a full blog getting started here!

And believe it or not, from where it sits today I don't even have 3k into it... not an expensive investment at all!

I had to fix quite a bit of the wiring, especially in the battery box to make it right... ALL the fusible links were gone and the original wiring components were crusty. Pretty much the entire harness was gone through and repaired as needed. Di-electric grease was flowing like honey...

Many of this little van's vital components actually live behind the dash!
Things like clutch/ brake master- booster for example... A huge cluster fawk of wiring harness as well as the majority of relays that make the thing function...

SO, it got a complete tear down and going through also...

After:

Everything was gone through... cleaned up and repaired.

After the engine and electrical system was done, I dug into the rest of the drive train... You find out pretty quick that any after market support for these things is pretty much non-existent. That, and the fact that most items are no longer available from Toyota... but adaptation is the mother of innovation!

The hubs got ripped apart and rebuilt and the rest of the drivetrain was pretty dam solid! It has a G series 5 speed trans (G-53) and a 2 speed transfer case in it. These were in pretty dam good shape for it's age! So just a basic fluid swap and clean up was all that was needed...

I also wanted something a wee bit bigger than the 24.5" tires that came stock with it... so I gave it a 2" lift and squeezed some massive 28's under it!

It has an IFS front, so a basic torsion bar crank got me 2 inches in the front... and the back is a 4 link coil suspension. So I found some coil spring spacers that gave 2" of lift and modded them to fit! That and some new shocks all the way round... This brought my ground clearance up enough I was comfortable with, maybe 10"? It's no rock crawler, but will get me to and back the great fishing spots I love!

After all was said and done, the thing rides like a Toyota pickup... pretty smooth and easy! I was happy with the results. The turning radius on this thing is freakin amazing! Where I would have to make a 3 point turn in my pickup, this thing does a simple U-turn. The wheel base on it is pretty great for a little van.

Theres a ton of other stuff that happened as well, like brakes and whatnot... but not gonna bore you all with that junk.

The interior was a rolling health violation by most standards.

I seriously pulled like 10 dead rodents from it, a squirrel nest from on top of the A/C condenser, and a village of mice from the back. The PO had installed fiberglass insulation throughout the back. Just a mecca for mice!

The wife refused to go near it... fawk even the dog was skeptical.

I gutted it.

I added some 1" foam insulation to the top and reflective all around the sides...

After the interior was cleaned out I started making all the panels for the back and the cab got a makeover as well... Added a BT stereo unit and 6 speakers so I could have music and navigation via audio.
WAAAAY more comfortable... Don't feel like dousing myself down with bleach after I drive it.

The body on this thing was riddled with small dents and some fender carnage... The panels/ doors were maladjusted so stuff wasn't closing right.
I decided to straighten/ adjust everything and start knocking tin to prep it for some paint. Stripped it down to the bare minimum...

I always liked the paint from the 80's toy era... so found a Toyota tan in Acrylic Urethane to spray it with.

And here is where it sits today...

In the coming weeks I will be finishing the inside...

Sleeping platform, storage, a flatscreen…

Stay tuned!

Ugly? Oh yeah...

Fun to drive? Oh hell yeah... it's like driving a roller coaster.

It actually has a pretty fair amount of room in the back. Can stick a whole sheet of plywood in the bed.

Need to figure out a simple layout for storage and sleeping... plus I was serious about a little flatscreen. Would be nice to kick it and watch tv when it rains while I am out and about.

This is way cool! I remember LowRange had one of these that they started building, it was on rock assaults. They never ended up finishing it though, and just sold it. But it was pretty sweet though.

Very cool, little purpose built camper!

I had one, never took it out, but was fun to rip around the yard in

Got a link to the paint you used?

You might consider getting it registered as an rv to cut insurance and stuff

The paint wasn't anything fancy...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Shoreline beige.

The whole paint job set me back maybe $200 and change with body filler and prep stuff (sandpaper, prep wash, primer and whatnot).

Insurance for it is cheap anyways, like 25 a month or something... heck registration for 2 years was only 35 bucks.

Have been gathering ideas for what to do to the back to make is comfy and useful...

I need a cook station, storage, and a proper sleeping area. It's just the wife and I... and the dog.

The last camping rig was great, but a wee bit cramped for a truck with a camper.

Was awesome for just me though! We did drive it across country. Twice. Decided we wanted something a bit more open...

I don't see tons and 40's happening. It would be a fabrication nightmare.

There are a few guys that have managed to squeeze some 30's under them...

And I think Josh Hensen's "deathmetal" had 33's?

This is just a chill roll around the woods camper van.

Thanks man!!!!

I think I might be up your way at the beginning of May. Possibly... might take it to camp at edge of the world!

Maybe Shnebbly hill, Oak creek... Need to get it done and stretch it's legs some! BEFORE the extreme tourism sets in!

We gotta roll through Flag to see the kiddo (do the dinner thing and visit) and always make an overnighter out of it!

So I had a bunch of 2x2 square tubing laying around and decided to throw together a little 5x10 camp trailer to haul the kayak's/ 12' boat/ whatever around on... Need to make a little hitch attachment for the van now and add some wood to the deck.
