Fancy Hobo Rape Shack

Despite what the internet might have you believe, some overlanders would rather pass on pricey, ready-built kits in favor of something DIY-centric. This means forgoing rooftop tents and already-assembled bed racks for a more bespoke project—in the case of Alaska man Tim Johnston, that means a small-scale log cabin in the back of his 1996 Ford F-350. And while some hardcore enthusiasts spend $50,000 or more while modifying their rigs, Johnston's cost him just $26,000 with the truck included.
espite what the internet might have you believe, some overlanders would rather pass on pricey, ready-built kits in favor of something DIY-centric.
Now, he and the truck venture out on days-long trips across Alaska's frigid terrain. Luckily, there's a reliable 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel under the hood that can take Johnston to and from campsites without issue...so long as it starts up in the morning. We imagine a block heater was number one on the modification list given the compression ignition lump's slow-cranking nature in the cold.

"My truck house is perfect, it has everything I need to stay out for as long as I need," Johnston added.

"I wasn’t in a rush with this project, I thought if I was going to do it again, I wanted to do it properly and make it exactly how I had pictured it in my head."

One thing's for sure: We couldn't have done it better ourselves. Just look at that front porch!

The kind that offers you a roofie or a ether soaked rag choice before they knock you out.

He can buy a running 30' RV for $20 K and not even have to pick up a saw and hammer.
$26 for that old truck and camper? Alaska must have some GOOD Meth.

I'll stick to my Hot Rodded 37 footer Class A. IT's a one bedroom apartment on wheels.
And probably gets better milage than that olf Ford. I get 13.5 mpg if I keep my foot out of the turbo.

So he spent $13,000 on the truck and $13,000 on the camper. Not quite sure how you spend $13,000 diying a camper that small, but to each their own...

You guys will talk shit about anything.

It's like none of you have ever built a rig. That's basically how it works. You dump 3 times the value into a crazy build that nobody wants or has a tiny market.

Pop up website is pop uppy.

I can see 13k in it real easy. Hell decent batteries, charging and solar setup will run you a grand. Also have to remember the Alaska tax, that everything is more expensive up there. That thing will probably outlast any slide in or shitbox camper

Must be a hipster thing. Sara Underwood camps out of a similar home built camper.
