The Welfare Duty
figured id do a build for buddys rig as know he wont and have had a few people ask about it.
it all started when he was looking for a rig to build as was thinking of doing a first gen explorer on tons but needed diffs so started looking for some 1tons and found this truck for parts as was in an accident. but after thinking about it just make more sense to fix it and build it as already had some parts for a SD laying around. like said truck was in an accident and driver side front end was pushed over and driver side rear of the box was messed up too. he picked up the truck for $800 and brought it home and started the build with budget and simplicity the main goals. he had about month and half to get it built and out of my shop while i recovered from surgery. the name Welfare Duty came from a friend as truck is a no dollar budget build with used or donated parts and we figure its made up of 7 trucks buy now. specs 2000 F250 with a 5.4 that had a tune up before and accident, sct tuner and a purple horny glass pack with a turn down shortened frame dana 50 front and 10.50 rear with 4.10s and welded used 6inch deaver springs but with pulled springs so about 4inchs of lift dirt logic shocks that cost more then the truck military XML tires on stock rims dont have a pic before going in the shop but was just another white work truck box gone and the frame cut https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Oj...8=w522-h949-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/R3...8=w522-h949-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/W7...s=w522-h949-no deaver springs in and donated flat deck https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/lw...U=w960-h540-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/RD...c=w960-h540-no military tires https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Kb...Y=w960-h540-no |
getting the frame closer to stock as was pretty bad after the accident
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/q6...w=w522-h949-no can see the S in the rad, was still holding and he got almost a year out of it https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Pv...=w1024-h576-no front dirt logic shocks in and ubolt flip https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/5i...Q=w506-h900-no on the back the shocks attach to the deck and deck is welded to the frame https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/H9...A=w534-h949-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/79...s=w534-h949-no used the stock fuel tank on the deck but had to modify the fuel lines on the sender to work https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Gu...E=w534-h949-no |
a friend gave him a old forestry bumper that got cut up and winch added
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-V...=w1024-h576-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/oz...E=w522-h949-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/J0...w=w522-h949-no took it out and wheeled it and on the 3rd trip the Dana 50 struck and busted an inner axle shaft https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ue...A=w960-h540-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/RJ...A=w522-h949-no figured that the shaft broke when the tire hit the leaf springs so had a friend build some 3/4 wheel spacers to fix that issue https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gn...c=w534-h949-no |
with the 50 back together and truck working well got it ready for our week long trip down to the states
first stop was Moses lake to play in the dunes https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3f...=w1024-h681-no then the Dana 50 struck again but this time blew one outer and the other side inner, so towed it back to camp and got to do a front end rebuild in the dunes https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gX...Q=w960-h528-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/bc...Q=w960-h540-no carrier was damaged so had some issues getting it out https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8d...0=w960-h720-no once back together we moved on to Elbe and truck worked well other then some steering issues and lots of body damage https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/kY...E=w960-h540-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/xD...Y=w960-h540-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/f9...A=w960-h540-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3v...Y=w960-h540-no |
once back home and a once over and a new door the welfare was ready for another beat down, this time at a friends mud bogs and obstacle course
nice part of being a white work truck is body parts are easy to get even if you have to rock some company logos https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/CK...=w1024-h576-no truck worked and placed 3rd in the bogs and 2nd in obstacle course https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/F3...g=w522-h949-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Zy...=w1024-h683-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/my...=w1024-h683-no after all the dana 50 issues that we had been having we brought an extra diff with us just incase but it held up https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/VT...Y=w522-h949-no |
after the mud bogs the Welfare got some steering upgrades with a new bigger pump, cooler and resi and made a world of differance
headed to another close to home town for the mud bogs and Hill and hole. truck did well but did not place this time and messed up the rad support, rad and trans cooler when nose dived in the hill and hole https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/CP...8=w960-h540-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/sm...Q=w960-h540-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/PE...A=w534-h949-no with a newish rad and cooler truck was ready for another beat down this time up Baldy. And the 50 struck again, this time with a blown hub then later in the day a ujoint and inner shaft https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/89...Y=w960-h720-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dw...k=w522-h949-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9D...Y=w522-h949-no around this time we stared running low on spare 50 parts but slapped the diff back together and headed back to Houston to do some early snow wheeling. truck did well and 50 lived but the XMLs just suck in the snow https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Lw...c=w960-h540-no |
that gets us up to date for wheeling but he has been working on it and getting ready for the some upgrades.
first up is to finally swap to a 60, picked this one up this summer for him for $100 and came with an extra set of shaft too. will run it stock and see how the the outers hold and upgrade once run out of stock ones https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/YM...E=w534-h949-no after running the XMLs for a year in everything from mud to sand to snow they have done an ok job but not great plus being so heavy has not helped with the axle braekage issues so time for some new boots. 40x16x16 LTBs and he picked up some used 16x10 aluminum rims as well for them https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/r5...M=w522-h949-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ly...I=w522-h949-no also has the parts laying around to do onboard air with a large tank, heim joints to upgrade the steering to dom links as have bent the crap out of the stock ones. future plans are hydo assist steering and add some tube work to the deck that would tie into a cage of some kind as well. some sliders and possibly small boat sides when doing the sliders |
