Vehicles broken into at Eagle Lakes staging area 8/31/12

Got a call from some friends who were going in this evening and met people who just found there vehicles broken into. They stole everything, wallets, backpacking equipement, and even a kids school backpack from a truck. Just giving a heads up.

this has gone on for years

This has been going on forever, and not just at eagle lakes staging but all up and down hwy 80. For a long time nobody was leaving tow rigs at eagle but it seems like people are getting comfortable parking there again. Here is a thread about this from 2007:

Never, Never, Never leave your vehicles at eagles lake staging area. Pay the parking at Cisco Grove and use the bypass. You'll be money ahead. Never had a problem there. Theft at eagles staging has been going on for years and will continue for years. Where there is an opportunity the bad guys will take it, and we'll be at the loss.

I left two very nice tow rigs at eagle lakes last week with no issue.

Make sure the rig is empty and anything worth value is out of the vehicle.

If you leave anything in sight, you are asking for trouble.

OP stated that there were backpacks, wallets, etc in the vehicle, dumb idea.

I leave my tow rig completely empty, a broken window is not as big of a deal as personal items.

Now that I think of it, maybe a sting operation is in order

and guess what happens when they dont find anything?

they damage your tow rig cause their mad they didnt find anything, one guy had a hole stabbed into his tranny pan.

id rather park at cisco, and that is where i do. i agree with the sting operation, the road into the staging area could very easily be blocked off with a vehicle to keep them there till the police show up, that is if they drive into the staging area.

maybe i'm wrong to blame him, but it's due to a conversation with a law enforcement officer at 3 am last weekend. had plenty of time to shoot the shit since my whole family was being kept up all night. learned quite a bit aboot shineyboo. not exactly at the top of thier favorites list, E.G. he might want to be even more hospitable twards folks here. you know how wheelers are twards each other and the businesses that cater to them, we watch out for each other and have mutual respect.

IMHO, if he provided a even slightly secure parking area for trailers, charged for it, i would be inspired to rent a cabin for the family. the wife could chill and read her books (while feeling secure that Nature wasn't going to jump out at her) while the kids and i are out wheeling/exploring. it would more than likely make more money than just catering to the 'artsy/REI' crowd. i would much rather park my trailer closer to eagle than up at cisco. he could also benefit from maybe a store set up so you could get those 'oh crap i forgot' items. i have some friends that own conveinience stores, they are quite profitable. also, most of us here have jobs and some money and have some money to spend, but as far as the "artsy/rei" crowd- they dont call them starving artists for nothing.

I agree with cleaning out your tow rig to make it look uninviting. I have always done that, but started getting comfortable and parking at Eagle Lakes a couple times this year. Parked at Cisco last night though and will continue to do so.

I honestly don't know why people still park at Eagle lakes, theft there has been going on for YEARS (as previously stated) .......just seems stupid to even take the chance of your tow rig being f*cked with after so many issues happening there.............I ALWAYS park at Cisco and will continue to do so as I know my shit won't get messed with there

I was surprised how many tow rigs were parked there Friday night.I always park at Cisco. I like to keep some spare parts in my tow rig.$10 a night is worth it to me,to have a peace of mind that my stuff will be the way I left it.

A friend puts on Mountain Vibe (a few weeks ago) @ Shineyboo.
He, along with a bunch of other folks I know that went are wheelers.

Depending on the weekend, you can actually park your tow rig there, just call first. (it's a large field that is sometimes used for campsites when he does events).

A game camera would work wonders...

My buddy has video surveillance inside his truck, I'll ask him how he did it.

Until these guys are caught and caught again, this will continue.

Lets set this up!

Never ending issue, just pay and park at Cisco, even though it has been quiet for quite some time, don't get complacent.

If you drive down the road past the Indian springs trailhead there is a hippie compound called shiney boo on the right as you drive down the mountain side to pierce creek ohv

I have had my truck broken into there about two years ago and my friends did this Friday night. I got there the morning after and had no problems being there Sat/Sun nights. As stated this has been going on for years so it leads me to think that it is someone the lives up there and works up there be it at Cisco or Nyack or something. The assbag cost me $220 for a rear window to only get $5 in change. My friends truck got the wing window broken out only for the dumbass to find out the truck was unlocked.

From what I recall this problem is not unique to Indian Springs....this is occuring all up and down the I80 corridor

Just a teaser, don't get your hopes up but the FOF has been in talks with the Nevada County Supervisors office to get the section of Eagle Lakes Road from the $5 trail to the Indian Springs turnout designated "Combined Use." We've had a couple of talks and some maps have been sent. We're hoping for an on the ground survey soon where we'll look at the safety concerns. I'll start a dedicated thread once we get a little further along where it looks like we might get some results and of course we'll call on all of you for support if we need public input.

I would pay the Shineyboo guy $5 to park. I'm willing to let bygones be bygones.

Brett..that would be great...I would be VERY upset, if I parked at Cisco (which I have done), and took the bypass...and got hit with ticket, all because I'm trying to keep my truck from getting broken into.
