Rattlesnake Road Gate Closed

Tahoe National Forest wants everyone to know Rattlesnake has finally gotten enough snow that the gate has been closed and it's shut down for the winter.

been on the trail a lot this year but never had to deviate from the norm. is there a way to go out at committee crossing other than rattle snake to get back to Cisco? guessing the answer is turn around and go back the way you came in. Not a bad thing just means you camp out if you have a rig like mine is all

If you go over signal peak it will drop you back at Indian Springs. Plus there is a gate on the way up to Signal Peak that they usually close once there is snow. Could get real sketchy as well with the icy conditions.

I sent the TNF an e-mail and asked about the gate. Below is the e-mail I received back from them. It's the answer I knew I would get but it doesn't hurt to ask.

"The District Ranger confirmed that they will choose to leave the gate closed. She asked me to forward her apologies, but due to the following reasons the gate will need to remain closed:

• The predicted storms this coming week will likely be just the beginning of the typical period where the road prism enters its wetted and weakened state, susceptible to damage from wheeled use.
• This will typically be followed by a snow pack that will mark the beginning of the road being used as a groomed snowmobile route.
• Even if we do not get enough precipitation this next week and we reopen the road, we’ll need to close it as soon as the weather comes. Since this date is unpredictable, this will cause confusion for the users, potential safety/access issues for our employee who is responsible for closing the road."

I'm hearing that Cisco is telling people that its ok to go through the camp/around the gate and they're opening it this week? If Cisco is telling people to go around and TNF doesn't want it open I see an issue...

Hopefully my e-mail will make them think about opening the gate.

I commented on our Facebook page that Rattlesnake was open again but there was a question about if it really was or not. Got this from Cisco Grove today.

"Hi Bret,

We just had a meeting with the Forestry Dept. and they are opening the gate at the bottom of Rattle Snake Rd up to Fordyce until the next BIG snow storm or the snow accumulation reaches the point that nobody can drive through the snow. Just thought we'd pass the news on to you and maybe you could let your members know.

Thank you,

Kaitlin

I just received this e-mail from the TNF.

"Jason:

Because the storms did not produce as anticipated, the snow from the last storm is almost melted, and the forecast for the next two weeks shown little to no precipitation the District Ranger has decided to go ahead and open the gate to Rattlesnake Road. It is currently open. It will be closed again after we received a good wetting rain or snow fall."

Who's the new Ranger, and how do we route notes of appreciation for this even-handed sanity-based management? Hell, what's her management chain so that we can carbon-copy them, too?

It is refreshing to find people in the Forest Service with clout who can manage based on actual conditions on the ground, rather than the calendar at the main office.

I appreciate that Friends of Fordyce, Cisco Grove Campground, and the adopt-a-trail clubs are well enough in touch with the right people at USFS to keep this issue on their radar... I'd bet that these well-established relationships are key to decisions like this. Thanks, all!

I don't really want to post her name on the internet but if you go to the Supervisors Office in Nevada City off Coyote Street, she has an office there shes the Yuba River Ranger and i am sure she would appreciate any supportive messages you leave.
