Ok I was wondering a few things about 2 gen ram transmissions. I have a chance to get a 1997 ccsb 4x4 on the cheap but the transmission is on the way out. I believe it is 46re. Will the 46rh work in the truck as I can't find a 46re in any junkyard around my area. I am looking to stay cheap if I get this truck as I am just looking to run it as a winter beater.
This really belongs in the noob forum. But to answer your question, yes the A518/46RH can be used but, depending on the year, it's not exactly a bolt in deal. What engine and year are both the transmissions you are dealing with?
RE and RH are the same except for the RH having a mechanical governor. Does your trans have a white plastic speed sensor on the drivers side of the trans near the tail housing?
You could use a RH but you would need an earlier PCM and I dont think that it would be compatible with the later chassis.
Either way its an overdrive trans and partially computer controlled (lockup and Overdrive) with the RE having an output speed sensor and a governor pressure sensor and solenoid.
You could put one in, but the pcm would go into limp mode, which I dont know for sure but may effect lockup and OD. Otherwise with a mechanical governor it would shift the other gears.
Oh and I assumed it was a 47 for some reason because Im used to dealing with them in the diesels, but you never said which trans it was.
Either way its the same deal. 46 or 47
Keep in mind that the 46RH is the same thing as the older A518 and was first used in 1990. There are a few differences since they do not have the notch for the crank sensor on the gas engines and the converter/flexplate setup is different. Not to mention the fact that the 4WDs were all passenger side drop so the transfer case shifter handle mount is on the wrong side.
