Thoughts? 14 bolt CUCV Axle w/ Factory Detroit Locker for Ultra 4 Racing.

Just picked up a 14 bolt rear end out of an 80s CUCV with the factory Detroit locker (not the gov lock) in the rear and 4.56 gears for my Ultra 4 build. Has anyone had this locker in an ultra 4 car? If so, how did it perform in the rocks and at speed? Are they too weak for racing? Thinking of possibly putting spider gears in the carrier and welding them instead. Low budget yet strong and reliable has been the theme so far for my build. Any input would be awesome!

weld it and forget about it, then sell the locker for money towards something else if this is a budget build

Ours was fine for a couple years. The ARB is more maneuverable when its open and more predictable when its locked.
Strength wasn't an issue with the Detroit.

Cool thanks, my friend has a set of spiders so they will be going in to be welded and the Detroit will be put up for sale. Any issues with swapping spiders into the carrier? Is the carrier for the detroit the same as the open carrier (looks like it from pics)

No problem swapping. Friend lunched a shaft the other day in his and it wiped out the detroit locker. I broke one in mine and locker survived but it was a very old unit from the old HO72 axles. For the new rig I sold that locker and welded up some spiders.

I dont trust detroits at all!

Weld it and forget about it

FWIW I have trashed 2x 14b spindles racing this year. Seems to be the weak link.

I couldn't imagine racing with one, the locking unlocking action feels odd in corners
