What's it all worth?

This is my first venture into the Ford section, please excuse my ignorance of "big trucks" I have a buddy with a '78 Ford 1/2 ton pickup (F-100, 150?) rusting in his yard. It is coil-sprung HPD44 front, SOA 9" rear, both 5 lug. It has 31x10.50R15 tires, but I don't know if that is the stock size or not. Both of the axles are completely stock. A guy dropped by today to ask him about buying the axles. Now the questions:

How much can he expect to get out of the completely stock '78 HPD44 and 9" axles? They are both pretty rusty on the outside, but are fine besides that. Neither of us know what gears they have, but they are open diffs.

The truck has a 2bbl 400ci V8 with auto tranny. Which transfer case would it have behind it? How much could he reasonably expect to get out of the transfer case?

Are the front coil or rear leaf springs considered desireable at all?

Sorry I couldn't give you anymore background info, but that is all of the info available to me. TIA

value

Only worth what someone is willing to pay, but if they are worth nothing to you give them to the guy who's willing to pick them up and get them out from underneath the rusting pile.

they are pretty much a dime a dozen especially the rear the front some people will pay a couple hundred for depending on the gears in it since factory they could have come with up to 4.10 but as low as 3.50 If you don't want the truck then tell him the truck goes with the axles the only thing worth anything is the tcase might be worth 100 ish depending on what it is

$150-$250 for the front
$100 for the rear
$100-$150 xcase
in NC

The 400M is a good torque motor but heavy, bigblock trannies only.
NP435- manual, C6-auto
Should be a 205 x-case which is damn tough but heavy.

I would sawzall the hell out of it, 4.56, weld the rear and wheel it if the tranny and motor are still good

Thanks for the replies. After relaying the message onto my buddy, he thinks he'll just tell the guy $450 and he can have the whole truck; use what he wants, and sell the rest to someone else. If that HP was passenger-offset, I would have snagged it years ago.

1st gear in the tranny is shot, which is why the truck got yarded 6 years ago. The engine ran fine at that time, but after just sitting for so long would probably need rebuilt. I'm sure he'll let the guy talk him down a bit................. but not all of us are independently wealthy and can just give something away that could help put some food in our kids' mouths

Thanks again. I'll have to talk to him about a % of the sale going toward my researching fee (j/k)

If the dana 44 has manual hubs at the wheels than the transfercase is probably a 205

the rear 9" will have 31 spline axles. If it has locking hubs from ford it will have a 205 if not a 203. the auto should be a c-6 but could be a c-4 (yes even with a big bell housing)

Good luck all these parts have tags on them so get your wire brush out and see.
