Best midsized truck

What would you consider the best mid sized truck example Dakota/Durango/pathfinder (non Jeep) etc for trail riding/ some mud and upgradability?

Chevy S-10. Sounds like you aren't doing much to it, they are cheap and so are replacement parts from mud getting into stuff.

Taco's are nice, but spendy and so is it to replace parts that mud is sure to chew up.

S-10 have next to no aftermarket support. The last year of S-10 is 2003.

S-10 will work for you if you like to custom build everything to upgrade, or get a taco which is almost like Wranglers with tons of bolt-on upgrades available.

I would 10x take a late 90s 2000s s10 4.3l over a toyota tanything.

If i need a commuter truck 4x id get a ex cab 4.3 5spd s10. My only bitch about them is the elec 4x control system and ecu. But at least its doesnt have a intergrated shift motor that can only be removed/resealed by completely tearing the tcase apart

ford ranger, cheap parts, simple to work on, cheap to buy, tons of bolt on crap available, 4.0lv6 is decently powerful stock, isn't a Toyota..

Yes. Those things have zero aftermarket and fall apart if you look at them funny.

A V8 in a truck like that would be nice. You may be able to find a higher or mid mileage Colorado which I wasn't even aware had been available with a V8 until I saw in a Offroad magazine I believe. If you don't want a V8 I'd say a tacoma.....but I'm slightly partial

They definitely are built out of unobtanium. I have one and I would have been better off to buy something at least some aftermarket support.
Lowest gears for the factory diffs are 4.56.
They changed the suspension almost every year so you can't find a lift other than a body lift.
Oddball small 6 lug pattern wheels.
Electric shift case after 2000.
I built it because I had it and it was paid for but it has never been quite right and always needs tweaking or I had to ghetto rig something because I couldn't find parts.
If I had a fully equipped shop it wouldn't be a big deal but building/repairing it in my driveway sucks.

This. V8 swaps are bolt in, stock t-case takes v8 power, available manual shift t-case and hubs, better build quality, ground clearance, and room than an S-10.

Ranger hubs are cheap fragile junk, how is that a positive?

why not jeep?

because you don't like the brand?

thats dumb. A comanche comes from the factory already done for the sort of things you want.
toss some 31's on it, go trail riding.

Ive seen a few crew cab s10s. Ive thought about building a family wheeler out of one. Then I remeber the wife thinks offroad toys are money pits The 4.3 can take all your favorite good trannys and t cases.

Yeah they're not... I'd rather rely on a manual ranger hub than a vacuum disconnect to get me in 4wd.

I'd rather rely on a unit bearing splined to the stub. Hubs suck.

ZR2 S10 or blazer
The 4.3 4L60e or nv3500 are great in a small truck
Toss in a small body lift and a real rear locker
Ditch the vacuum actuator on the front diff with a cable
