Drive train suggestions.

Trying to get my buggy build planed out, So far I have a early bronco 44 & explorer 8.8. Wanting to stay as light as posisble, I want a 4 banger.
First thought was 2.3 but I can't find a 4x4 trans anywhere & there sorta on the low side of making decent hp with out a ton of money.
So what would be a decent drive train? thanks in advance for the info.

2.3. Check out my "project to clean to cut up" in the suzuki section.
There is someone in the axle/tire section thats trying to trade away his 4 runner project that had a c4 to toyota case that im sure could be had cheap.

Find a turbo coup thunderbird for cheap and pull the motor.







But... if I wasnt a ford guy, id go 2.2 ecotec. Easier to adapt and more info/ people working with them.

16v suzuki 1.6 is also a good, cheap, simple option. Part out a 4x4 auto sidekick. The trannys are solid and you can buy 4-1 tcase gears that are easy to install.

Problem with a Ford 2.3 is they're really not very light, still 300 pounds which is heavy as fuck for the power, turbo ones push 375 with all the stuff. Suzuki 1.6/1.8/2.0 all hover around the 200lb mark which is pretty damn light for the output and the fact you can get one already hooked to a 4wd transmission.

Depending on chassis layout a transaxle setup is really light but it can cause some packaging problems depending on what you want for styling and seating.

Im a big fan of the transaxle buggy . No need for a tcase and 4-1 reduction . Ideal for light weight cheap singal seat .

With a light rig you can keep 44s or toy diffs alive.

Really after building a "built 2.3" price wise it doesnt make sence compards to other options, and like I said you have to really be a "ford guy".
The nice thing about starting with a turbo 2.3 is its fairly easy to get as much power as you want later on.

Tacoma 3RZ. With a 5spd manual and manual J-shift tcase (can be converted to twin stick). They are already drivers side output so no need for adapters or anything.

have been thinking about building a mini buggy as well. i plan on using a gti swift 1.3 dohc with a turbo set up then have a early 90s tracker auto and tcase as can do a trail gear 4.24 gear set and some half ton axles.

I know of a few good light buggies that used the throw away 2.5 4 bangers from YJ's and TJ's. Here is a video of a jimmy's rig with a 2.5 700R4 trans and D300 or atlas with D44 front 9 inch rear on 37 inch stickies. They are light and tough as shit. Rockworx in Montrose made one similar for adults with tons and 39's. Every one knows the jeep 4 banger as a gutless turd but in a light rig with low gears they aren't as bad as people make them out to be.


Ryan Miller here races in DirtRiot with a 2.5 AX5 and atlas 4 speed on tons and 40's. He's won quite a bit and has some points championships as well I believe.

Also I run a multi port 2.5 and a 4 speed atlas as well
With just bolt on and and lots of geering options it does everything I need and it doesn't mid the rpms

I laughed a little when you posted this. But it's true. I tried to kill my 2.5 for years and it just kept on going. Decent weight. Worked really well down low and it loved the rev limiter

Sorry so long to reply, But reading the comments, I don't see any one mention the driver side case, I'll be useing a early bronco 44 till I kill it, then a HP 44 if I dont keep it under my ranger.
Allso I don't think i'll be useing a atlas or anything of that nature. Planes are to find a jy drive train and just do a buggy around it.

So looking at my choices with this is a 2.2 ecotec, ford 4.0. 2.3 or a divorced t case since I want to use the axle I have. Would love the eco, but have had no luck finding a trans adapter that will mate to a trans with driver side tcase.
the 4.0 would be simple thro in have fun as well as 2.3. Im trying to stay as small/light weight as I can so really want a 4 banger.

My first thought was all the 80's S10 4x4 trucks with T5 trans. They ran a left drop NP207 or NP231. Can't you build a T5 with a Ford front half and Chevy tail?

I went with a turbo 2.4l Ecotec with a 904 transmission. The Ecotec has a decent support and aftermarket parts.
