Full hydro with a steering box

I'm working on a low speed offroad-only project, so no worries about school busses full of nuns. I haven't messed around with steering boxes before so I'm looking for someone with more experience to chime in.

I'd like to run the steering off a joystick because the cab doesn't really lend itself to a steering wheel. The base frame has a steering box and I'd like to avoid re-doing all the front suspension, at least for now. I'd be leaving the box, but removing the steering shafts.

Can I just drill the box like people normally do for hydro assist, and instead use those 2 holes to control pressure in the box? Would I then need to cap off the original fittings and/or disable the original valving on the shaft? I've been looking at a lot of cutaway diagrams but I'm not quite sure on how to do this.

Why do you have to redo all the front suspension? cant you just delete the drag link and mount a single ended ram on the axle some where and have it connected to the tie rod/ knuckle. Also WTF are you working with?

No, the box only sends power to the ram when the mechanical portion sees force. Ie: trying to bleed a hydro assist set up with the tires off the ground, pull the ram off and it won't move.

Replace steering box with a rear steer valve.

Sorry, I forgot some details. It's a Dakota with IFS and the idler arm on the passenger side. There is no drag link. You're right that I could just use the box as a pivot point and throw a ram on it, but that's not as compact a solution as using the box as the ram. I'm talking about locking out the original "mechanical portion" that you're talking about and routing the fluid with an external valve to make the box move without physical input.

A steering gear directs fluid based on the position of upper part of the input shaft compared to the bottom part (the part that the piston that meshes with the sector shaft rides on). There's a coupler with a some slop and a torsion spring between the two parts. When you turn the steering wheel you're twisting the torsion spring to open a valve to send fluid to the side of the piston that will help you turn in that direction.

I'm simplifying a little bit. Read all the longer steering threads if you want to know more.

Basically fluid just bypasses the parts of the box that makes the pitman arm turn unless you put enough torque on the input to direct the fluid where you want it.

If you really want to use a joystick you could get small hydraulic motor (ideally one with about the same torque as a person cranking the steering wheel to preventing things from breaking if it stalls), stick it on the input shaft of the steering gear and use the joystick to control which direction and how fast it turns.

An actual steering wheel or just replacing the steering gear with an idler and then doing a traditional full hydro with rams to the knuckles and the mechanical tie rods just for alignment would likely yield superior performance.

have to turn the steering shaft going into the steering box for it to direct fluid, no way around it.

I build these for another sport and have contemplated running a version of it in my next KOH build.
