Converting dually rearend to SRW

I'll be picking through a junkyard next week looking for a D70U-1 or -2, or a D70 HD.
I doubt I will have alot to choose from and may have to settle for a dually rearend.

I have read that 14 bolt DRW's are a little bit narrower compared to SRW 14 bolts, but that D70 DRWs are actually wider than SRW D70's.
Is this true for all D70's?
What are the common widths between D70 SRW's and DRW's?

And what is involved in converting a DRW axle into a SRW axle?
If it's mainly just brakes, I plan to swap to disks anyway so mebbe it isn't an issue.
Is there a problem with the hubs, like too much stickout form the drive flange or?

not a rear, but it would still work on one. not sure about width issues though.

just turn down the outer flange...

Thanks, those are some good pics. I can see how that could solve the prob in the front. Seems like that would give alot of hub stickout, or is it the same as a SRW frontend?
And will it work or is it necessary for the Dually rearend?
Also, anybody got some figures for D70 SRW width compared to D70 DRW width?
I know some of these questions will be answered when I finally get to the junkyard but it looks like it will be a while before that can happen.

I have a 85' D70u out of an E-350 and I thinks around 74" wms to wms ( I think )

All I know is my D70 (not U of HD) came out of a 1979 Ford Dually cab 'n chassis. It measures 65" WMS-WMS. All I did to "convert" it was install shorter lug nuts.

A cab and chassis 14 bolt is narrower than a SRW 14B. A dually pickup 14B is wider than a SRW 14B. A cab and chassis is just that, a truck sold with a cab only. Typically this is what you see under trucks with utility beds, tow trucks etc. They are DRW.

Doesn't help on your 70 questions, but wanted you to know that not all dually 14B are the same.

If I could find a CNC D70, that would be perfect. Otherwise, I need to wait until I find a srw. 74" is wiiide.
I went through TracTech's applications chart and came up with some notes on which donor trucks to look for.

Dana 70 Info

D70 covers will usually have some bottom lip sticking out underneath them.
D70s will measure 15 -15 from top edge of cover to top edge of pinion bore.
D60s will measure 14 -14 from top edge of cover to top edge of pinion bore.
The minimum spindle OD for an acceptable D60 is 1.95 or so, minimum ID is 1.63 or so.

All year models listed below will:
Have 1.50 shafts with 35 splines
(Need to verify spline count before purchase)
Will accept all ratios of gears
(Should look for 4.56 (41/9) if possible so you will get the right case break)
Look out for:
Some 1991-up D70s are 32 spline junk.
Make sure you dont get a D70U-3 (started showing up after 1987)

Ford
1983-1985 F250 could have a D70U
1983-1997 F350 could have a D70U-1 or D70U-2
(Make damn sure you dont get a D70U-3 after 1987)
1975-1985 F350 could have a D70HD

Dodge1971-1990 1 Ton and Ton trucks and vans
(Make sure you verify spline counts, and BOM#)


Anybody got anything to add or correct?

The reason for the lip sticking past the cover is that the cover is the same on D60 and D70 but the D70 housing is beefier.

On a D70, the axle tubes neck down before entering the brake drum. This makes narrowing a pain, but does help with identification.

while im at it, heres a comparo of a 4.10 60 pinion and its inner wheel bearing right beneath it, and a 70 4.10 pinion with its inner wheel bearing. i dont think i need to point out which is which.

i really should have set up my 60 first, cause after doing my 70, the 60 looked all kinds of pussy and it got me worrying about carnage.

I just purchased a Dana 70U (marked 70-1SU) supposedly out of an '86 E350. It's tubes do not neck down like you state, which should allow me to narrow it easily. Just thought I'd throw this out there. I guess there is some variation in the housings.

Very limited gear selection, deepest available is 4.56, IIRC.
And they have 32 spline axle shafts.
But still strong enough to be found behind diesels, if you like the gears available.

Why not a ford(sterling) 10.5 1 1/2 dia 35 spline from factory I gotmine for $150 I think they you can get 5.13 for them to??
