Anyone ever f**k up tapping thier box????

this is just great. had a buddy bring me his "tapped" box last night wondering how we could fix it. this is a factory jeep box, drilled/tapped per the billa tech article.

drill locations are perfect.

heres the problem. top/side hole is oval, "threads" only worked on 2 sides of the hole.

both holes the threads are fucked. tap must have been reaaaaaaaaaallll buggered up.

so i need to drill this out larger and re-tap. what im thinkin is drilling it out to fit an 1/2-something helicoil. then coiling it. then going to a male/male adapter from 1/2-something to 1/4 npt. then haveing hoses made to fit the 1/4npt.

anyone see a problem with this??

anyone had to fix a similar problem?? how'd ya do it?

I screwed up my first one. I ended up getting another box and using a press and a vise to get the hole strait.

Maybe you could go to the next size up. I've had mixed luck on getting the coils to seal under pressure.

Drill it out bigger and use a thread insert maybe. With teflon seal it should hold alright.

NPT threads are tapered and they seal on the threads, so coils don't work well. Make sure that the tap was run deep enough into the hole to completely cut the threads. If it has been tapped properly and the threads are still bad, just move up to the next bigger size NPT fitting.

Why not go 1/2" or 3/8" npt to -6AN or what ever size AN you need?

I agree redrill/tap for 3/8NPT then adapt the the AN fitting you need.

3/8 NPT-37/64" drill size.

I say plus size the whole/tap. I tried the helicoil option and it never sealed properly. Held just fine but would always leave a little puddle under the truck after sitting for a day or 2

X10 on the over tap and AN reduction.

just get a couple female pipe fittings, and weld them to the box over the holes.
I never liked the dril tap method, there is not much material there to thread.

The tap didn't make the hole oval, the person drilling did.

+1 for going up in size for the NPT.

3/8th NPT should do the trick. You can get 3/8-1/4 NPT adapters easily and use an off the shelf 1/4 hose and you're set.

do you have enough room to plug it and move over a little?

slow the drill down and get a sharper bit too

but i also like the weld on idea for more material

That's how PSC does theirs. They also sell the steel fittings on their site. I've got a stock TJ box if your buddy wants to start over. KC has my number if you want it.

Not sure about you guys, but I use 3/8" hoses. My box is tapped 1/4" NPT, though.

First, I'd try grinding the first few threads off the bottom of the tap and making a, "Bottoming" tap of sorts and tapping again. I've had mixed luck with this where there is no other option, just don't grind too many threads off or you'll end up with a hole so big you can't get a fitting to seal on the threads.

If that fails I'd go to 3/8" NPT, drilled/tapped correctly this time.

Use a sharp bit and a drill press, go next size larger and away you go.
